Help making my mind up

Featured Replies

Okay guys i need help LOL.

I need a second car and narrow'd it down to either a Ibiza Cupra TDI or a Fabia VRS with a remap.

TBH i like the front of the Fabia better but like the rear of the Ibiza better LOL.

I hear the Ibiza will remap better? and you dont need anymore supporting mods like you do with the fabia e.g a different FMIC and i hear the Cupra handles better? and will be faster in a straight line?

I know the insurance is more expensive.

I know the interior is drab on the cupra but it is on the fabia.

Any suggestions/experiences?

Ive heard the ride in the Cupra is hard and harsh.

But the Cupra is a faster car and does come with more as you said. Like FMIC, bigger brakes, etc.

I think the vRS would do slightly better MPG and is better at cruising.

And I also think the finish is slightly better in the vRS.

If you're wanting the car mainly for performance then I would go for the Cupra.

I ended up choosing a vRS as I thought it was a better all round car. It has good performance when I want it. But when I just want to cruise its great at that too.

I wanted a Fabia and wasnt so keen on the Cupra but now I wish I went for the Cupra, I saw a nicely modded one the other day and fell in love!

But I would choose the VRS over the FR version.

The Cupras are pretty rare and carry a premium for a nice one :)

I have both well my VELP* has one.

Although mine is modded I've had it from standard bar a map, I'll base my comparisons on this.

2004 remapped Fabia - 170BHP 300LBS 85k miles at the time

2004 ABT mapped Cupra TDi 198BHP 327LBS 31k miles at the time

The Fabia is GP 6 insurance

The Ibiza is GP 16 insurance

Fabia does 54+ MPG (71.7 highest)

Ibiza does 39+ MPG (56 highest)

Very little between them in a straight line. Cupra is faster however.

Cupra is faster through the gears and has a more aggressive map. There are different ratios on the gearbox however.

Fabia rules the corners. Cupra isn't bad, just a bit less confidence in it. ( incidentally I've changed the tyres from 205/40 to 215/45 and it's helped a lot! )

Ibiza is a softer more comfortable ride. Cupra is harsh not unlivable as we,ve had it for 2.5 years.

Check for buckled wheels. They have 5 full size wheels, at least 3 of rs are slightly buckled due to the stiff ride.

I've had to get the wheels aligned 3 times as its been knocked out several times.

Interior in the Cupra is not as well put together as the Fabia, feels cheap and rattley, it's very dreary except for a few wee red accents on the vents and the centre of the steering wheel.

However on test driving a 2007 FR when I was trying to find the VRS it was worse than the Cupra, very flimsy and rattley.

Brakes on the Cupra are much better than the 288mm units on the Fabia and still better than the 312mm upgrade. The extra 2pots on the AP 4 pots make all the difference.

They are however a ****** to change the pads a the pins holding them in cold weld themselves to the alloy calipers.

Insurance on the Fabia I pay £400 fully comp with my VELP on the insurance all mods declared. (Adrian Flux)

Insurance on the Cupra is £500 fully comp remap declared. With me on her insurance.

Bear in mind Northern Ireland is generally more expensive for insurance.

Cupra has an FMIC as standard and the PD160 turbo and Air intake.

Fabia has a SMIC as standard and the PD130 turbo and air intake

AFAIK there is different management and injectors also.

Any more questions just ask!

Velp haha love it! :D

Great comparision there some really good points!

I was thinking about the cupra before the vrs but the price swung it for me..the insurance was the biggest thing! Whichever one you get though it'll be a good choice :D

Haha VELP :D

Wow thanks mate.

I can get a 2006 fabia private for around £4000 just dark coloured alloys and a front splitter.

So your saying both re-mapped there is not a lot in it in a straight line? fabia looks a lot heavier, I'd expect the cupra to stop better but the fabia handles better?

I've just checked out insurance fully comp with blah blah fabia=£465 ibiza cupra=£520

I will be slightly modified the car that goes without saying? so a little money can make it better.

I can't base it all on looks but its 50/50 some folk say the fabia looks better, others the ibiza, i think the fabia might just edge it. The extra MPG out of the fabia is a plus.

Cheers

While the Fabia maybe cheaper to buy, assuming you'll be upgrading the brakes, intercooler, suspension, intake then I'd imagine the Cupra to be better off from a ££ perspective. No need to buy the brakes, FMIC, intake or aspects of the suspension. I'm guessing the Cupra uses a PD150 turbo, so that's a better starting point too. Plus, you'd have to declare those mods on the Fabia which I'd imagine would push the price up come insurance time.

And the Cupra gets more toys IIRC like climate control, folding mirrors and other non-Fabia options.

Brakes on the Cupra are much better than the 288mm units on the Fabia and still better than the 312mm upgrade. The extra 2pots on the AP 4 pots make all the difference.

Extra 3 pots surely? ;)

The MPG surprises me, given they're pretty much the same car/engine though! Maybe it's driving style?

Good point mate, I'll be remapping the fabia I take the SMIC heatsoaks too so that will need done too, I'll be lowering it on springs too and upgrading the sound system slightly but thats about it so the Cupra good be more cost effective for me.

No folding Mirrors on my VELPs, but there is CC.

3 Pots indeed! Thanks for that lol bit of a silly statement i made there.

The MPG was from me driving so i'd say it purely from the map. I'm taking it to get the EGR coded out this week as thats supposed to increase the MPG rather well in them according to SC.net :)
