Monte Carlo Diesel...it's surely not as bad as this review!, is it?

Featured Replies

They sound Clattery to me,

& it seems a bit stupid to have the Bling but no ping.

Looks much better than a vRS IMO.

So i would say, it is a pretty fair opinion from him.

was that written by clarkson?

his sort of mentality

that does not give a true representation of a the 1.6tdi, if he was expecting VRs performance he should have driven one of them instead

also shows the hack (certainly not a journalist) does not know his subject and how to drive a diesel or the target audience for the car

i could go on but i will leave it at that

Yup. Agreed.

Sounds like the pillock knows nothing about diesel engines.

All diesels from all manufacturers even the very new stuff do have a certain clattery sound to them.

What he's forgetting is that yes, it's no peppy turbo petrol etc but driven properly and it's no slouch either! Plus the whole point of having that engine in the car is that it has enough poke to get it moving quickly enough but still able to do super MPG.

Now, I'm 35, but am aware this will make me sound 65:

Modern road testers don't "get" diesels. They want them to be petrols, just with better economy. If they're a bit noisier, they're rubbish. If they aren't as powerful as a more expensive petrol model, they're rubbish.

They drive them like a petrol, so expect instant acceleration from low revs and to be able to wring it out to the red line a la VTEC. Even car mag testers with long term diesels regularly write about how they thrash the rump off their cars and are disappointed with the economy, but in the most part, performance is good enough or as quick as a petrol alternative (which would be much worse). They don't seem to adjust their driving style, staying on full attack, maximum oversteer, lowest mpg possible.

No, no, no.

I have a Monte 105 TDI. Why would a 1.2 petrol be better? Yes it has the same power, but it has about half the torque, so nowhere near the real-world go (IMO - I have only driven my Dad's TSI estate). So I think not. I'm sure the petrol is quick enough and if you adapt your driving style, wouldn't feel slower than my TDI. Neither is going to be a 180 bhp vRS though.

As for the last comment - dressing your Fabia in rally clothes is like watching your Dad at a disco, maybe, but would I buy a Mini? Nope - overpriced and overrated. Citroen? Tried French a few times, good on kit, poor on quality.

Must go, I have a nervous tic to suppress...

Whatcar's reviews have never been brilliant and almost snobbish. They write off cars of the smallest of issues.

As stated above all diesels have a distinct sound and could be described as rattlely, but the CR sounds much more refind then the old PD unit did. This seems pretty much the way all manufacturs who have replaced thier old diesel tech and gone comman Rail.

Im not a massive fan of diesels i prefer petrol cars, that said i prefer V - engines but Most of cant afford our perfect car/engine combi lol.

That said ive driven Octavias with the both TDI engines i love the 2.0 CR TDI very grunty perfect.

The 1.6 i was so excited by. BUT even in the octavia it was punchy and did its job well.

I personally think he has writteb this with the previous VRS in mind.

A sport fabia with a diesel engine. But its not a VRS. So to him it maybe useless. But its not true reflection on the car in my mind.

Ive not driven a monte TDI, but i enjoy my 86hp TSI one, quick enough to satisfy me atm its handles great in my opinion (the sportyest car ive had was a Vectra SRI 1.8)

And the car is itself is plenty practical enough with plenty of cubby and stroage to keep me happy and the car tidy :)

must admit my 1.2tdi greenline sounds like a old tractor from cold, but once warmed up much better
