2002 fabia 1.9 sdi mileage and other bits

Featured Replies

Hi all im just wondering if 100k miles is considerd high for my 52 plate fabia

Basically i baught the car for £400

Tax and mot had just run out

Last mot had no advisories

It has a few minor little problems most of witch ive sorted

Few knocks to bodywork nothing serious

Front and rear pads disks and shoes needed changing so done that

The engine is clean starts as soon as the key is turned not hesitations no leaks anywhere on top or underneath and the oil is black not creamy witch i take as a good sign

As its done 100k miles and ive no idea if its had the cam belt changed should i look at having it changed

Ive took the cover off and the belt looks ok no freying no cracks but should i go by that

I plugged a scan tool into the diagnostics port there was 4 errors i cleard them all and went for a drive then rescanned and only one error comes up witch is fuel temp sensor open or short to + any ideas what this means

And lastly im going to give the car a full service is halfords own desiel 10w40 a good choice to put in the engine as i dont want to spend mad monie on oils but dont want to take the **** at the same time and gearbox oil whats a good oil to use at a good price

Soz for the long post and thanks for reading guys

Your input will be verry helpfull

fuel temp sensor is under the lid inside the pump i think, cheap part., but if it doesnt seem to bother the car leave it.

100k Miles is very low, i have a turbo version and is just ending its run in period at 200k miles. Alot up here make 400k many taxis have got this and still going.

Sounds like a bargain

Cambelt-if you don't know when it was last done-do it now.

100k-mine's on 147k and doing nicely thank you, 59mpg over 7 years and 89k miles. 250k is not unusual for the engine if looked after.

The SDI engine is not as picky as pd engines about its oil but the Quantum Synta 505.01 is a good bet and not unreasonably priced if you look around.

Gearbox oil-oh that's the stuff in the gearbox-never changed it.

Adding a lot of Tesco sunflower oil to the diesel brings the running costs down very nicely, not recommended for pd engines but SDIs don't mind at all. I run anything upwards of 50% oil. 5 litre bottles are currently £10 for 2 in Tescos.

Fuel temp sensor-sorry haven't a clue,

Sounds like a bargain!

ye it was a bargin had a mate look under it the other day and he said the engine was spotless no leaks or the usual

im going to add a few pics but since these pics was taken ive sprayed all the side trim black and cleaned the car and engine up

i have had to do some work on the car but so far nothing serious

so the halfords oil ive got will be ok to put in the motor

also whats a PD engine???

also ive got a set of polo 2012 alloys 15 inch now ive offerd them up to the skoda hub and the stud patern is the same however the skoda hub lip bit is slightly bigger then the alloys

wouls small wheel spacers be a good idea

im not looking to spend loads on the car so any cheap bits i can do i will like the polo wheels for example

thanks for the replys guys

and fyi i will be looking to mod the car once ive got it all up to scratch grinnnn

Pd is pumpe duse and doesn't concern yoursbut a good 5w40 fully synthetic oil like quantum platignum from skoda is about the best for it.

thanks lofty79 i did see that oil when in halfords but was an extra tenna lol but untill i mot the car and can be sure im gona keep it to be my daily driver then im not realy looking to pump cash into it as atm i drive a 2010 grand vitara 2.4 petrol and it drinks like mad so hopeing the skoda is all good and il move to that as my daily runner and put more cash into it..

Good idea. Don't get the oil from halfords, go skoda deLer, oil filter and new sump plug. Wangle a discount and you get quantum platignum for 28 qquid . Make sure its vw 505.00 at least or better 505.01 from whatever brand you buy

well already got the oil as baught it the other day but have to confess its the halfords 10w40 stuff as i got the trade card its kinda my first point of call as the card gives good discounts but i might take it back and exchange it for the fully synth stuff

oil filter is on its way as is a fresh fuel filter and fresh air filter is in.

can you advise me on what gear oil is good to go with again nothing expensive just something good at a good price

thanks all

also anyone got any ideas on the rims

im not sure if i should have the rims machined a little so they fit over my skoda hub lip i recon that is the best idea

but gona cost me per wheel

or can i just use spacers its the easiest option for me and cheepest but is it safe and will it work

also i know ill need to get diffrent bolts witch isnt a problem

and lastly the steelies on my skoda are standerd 14'' and the polo wheels i got are 15'' will this cause any problems

Trouble is if you use spacers to make it proud so centre bore doesn't catch means wheel centering will be an issue. That'swhy we have spiggot rings etc. The result would be hit and miss. You could end up with a case of wheel wobble, very minute off centre placement.

It's just run in.

Cam belt never take a chance so, yes, do it.

The air filter is probably worth changing as the book gives a ridiculous mileage between changes.

Changing the brake fluid is a good idea if you don't know when it was last done.

Enjoy

As said 100k miles is run in for a diesel, mines on 166k miles

Ye i wasnt going to be to hopefull with the spacers. Another person kinda sead nooo dont do spacers

Ok so spiget rings ive hurd of em but not sure how they work

And tomos im taking the 10w40 bk to halfords and exchanging for there fully synth stuff

Im going to look into getting the cam belt done

As for air filter and brakes ive done them new brakes all round and disks and all bled up

Changed desiel filter also today

New oil filter and fully synth going in tomoz.

Also my clutch pedel the biting point is really high is this a sign of my clutch going or do i need to bleed it as they are hydralic arent they ?

Mine's been like that for 89K, wait for it to start slipping.

  • Author

Ok sounds good to me its not slipping yet so il just wait.

Biting point is high on ours (130K) and always has been. Did you bleed it when you did the brakes?

bleeding the clutch would only make pedal higher, as it increases the effective push of the slave cylinder. If it has more push it will disengage sooner ie higher up.

Ohh ok so whats my option ? Wait til its slipping and just replace

Yes, I've been waiting 7 years.

I had a VW Polo in the past which had a high bite point - Quite normal for this engine I think you'll find, soon get used to it

Ye your probibaly right il just go with the flow whats the worst that can happen no clutch well thats why i got AA cover

You know i havent actually had my fabia out and about as doing work to it bit by bit every day for getting it ready for mot but already im falling in love with it

Its been so easy to work on

( not that ive had anything serious to do yet)

And ive heard nothing but good about the sdi skodas ok its not turbod up so not quick but these things seem to be bomb proof and im not after quickness just cheapness and reliability

My 2.4 16v petrol grand vitara dose about 20 mpg

And road tax well lets just say it hits my wallet every time round insurence isnt to bad considering the car but this skoda now looks like its going to have much better mpg plus tax is half what it is for my 2.4 per year and insurence is going to be half also around 350 comp

Fingers crossed my £400 investment dose me well if it dose il be part x'ing the 2.4 in for a skoda in about 6 months ????
