Steering wheel reach adjustment

Featured Replies

Hi, I wonder if anyone else has/had this problem. I cannot seem to get comfortable in my Yeti- is a 2.0 diesel 4x4 (140) DSG in Elegance spec, so all the bells & whistles, which I've had for 15 months. I have narrowed it down to the steering wheel reach adjustment- i.e. it won't quite come out far enough. I previously had Volvo V70s and the wheel would come out way more, so I could easily achieve the peddles-to-backrest rake-to-steering wheel position.

I have even tried contacting a few Motability car modifiers which has drawn a blank. I'm no engineer but moving the steering wheel 40mm nearer to me cannot be more dangerous than the number of women I see who sit so close, their boobs must be touching the steering wheel !

Does anyone know if for example, say, the Superb Boss is deeper or the Fabia? that sort of thing. I have tried a few Skoda dealers and basically get the response "computer says no" if you know what I mean.

So how tall are you?

Do you have very long legs?

How raked to you have the seat back?

I'm finding it difficult to understand why you need the wheel another nearly 2" further out.

The Elegance spec means the wheel controls the radio/phone and maxidot display and menus so you would have to find a wheel with compatible canbus compliant controls. That narrows the choice substantially I'm afraid. It is possible that a VCDS wizard could get at the coding so as to make another VAG wheel work but a dealer would not be willing to do so. One member here had Shark prformance code an Octavia wheel with flappy paddles but I don't know if the reach is different.

And I wonder what the insurance company would say?

Short arms?

Thank you for your advise Freedom. Unfortunately VRS steering wheel does not improve reach, and from what you say, it sounds like a lost cause anyhow.

Llanigraham, I do 50,00 miles a year & It's taken me all this time, together with umpteen visits to my Osteo and an MRI scan on my back to come to the realisation that this extra 2" of reach might make the difference. I can only speculate that this could help as I have tried everything else. Love my Yeti but hate the pain in my back/numbness turning into almost cramp-like pain in my right thigh.

This seemed to me to be the most cost effective thing to try but thank you all anyway.

Sorry, JCP- not Freedom... Doh! I hadn't scrolled up enough to see your name!

...cramp-like pain in my right thigh...

Thigh pain is often caused by having the seat set too high. Try lowering the seat.

Interesting this, one of the reasons I sold my last car was because of back pain (sciatica) and with the Yeti things are much easier for me, certainly getting into and out of the car. I know we are all different shapes and sizes so works for me may work for everyone.

and or lumbar support, the Elegance seats are adjustable for this.

The Fabia, Octavia Yeti and Superb steering wheels are the same depth.

Sorry, but I can't see how having the wheel 2 " towards you is going to help.

Has your osteopath actually seen you in the car and checked your seating position?

From experience after reading the Recaro web site most people have adjusted the seats incorrectly.

Have you ever had a trained professional assess your seating position? Often, what feels initially comfortable can be bad for longer-term seating comfort, but it may take someone else to spot what is wrong. Getting a consultation would be a lot cheaper than modifying your car,

You will have been spoilt with the V70 seats: they are some of the best around.

I have to agree on this, the wheel needs to move further out. I find myself leaning forward when driving.

I have found the electric seat made the most difference having much greater range of adjustment than the manual seat does. The OP doesn't state (or I missed it) which seat you have.

I am the one with the vRS flappy paddle MFSW fitted. It was identical to the 4 spoke one it replaced, as Gizmo stated. .

Always glad to be of help.

Very useful links - ta!

I think my seating position is pretty close to as recommended but will check it again. :)

Hope it is going better after verifying the seating position. If you are doing a lot of mileage, it may help to modify the seat position occasionally, seat height - distance from steering wheel - lumbar, in order to let your body relax and re-adjust. I have an Elegance, too, and haven't experienced any problems yet. Good luck.

I must comment that the yeti seat (drivers side,I havent tried any other) is by far superior to seats of other makes and models I have had over the years.

Even after a couple of hours at the wheel , I leave the car refreshed and with no annoying pains here and there.......(63 years old... :ninja:..ha ha ha.. ) Also,I tend to move about less in my seat whilst driving , looking for a more comfortable position,if you know what I mean. It seems to me a lot of thought and consideration was put into the seating comfort and steering wheel placement of the Yeti when designing it. . What do you think?

I find the seat section uncomfortable, think its the narrow band of leather material to the front of the seat.

Arn't we all a bit different, what suits one ...

You can alter the seating settings but you can't alter your body shape. :giggle:

Of course you can, my seat was incredibly uncomfortable after a few miles initially as I was too wide for it. Final spur to lose weight, now it is very comfortable.

Answer to the band at the front and being too close is often because the seat is too high? Certainly I had this proble initially. Try playing with the seat height, if it is lower, you can get neare the wheel for the same leg length somehow.

I must agree though I would have liked the wheel to come nearer by choice.
