Steering Pulling?

Featured Replies

Anyone experiencing steering pulling to one side intermittently? Apparently Up! owners in the UK and the Continent are reporting this phenomenon. Apparently the electro/mechanical steering has an automatic centering feature. It seems that on the Continent this tends to manifest in pulling to the left and in the UK to the right! This might suggest that road camber driver correction might be causing the steering centering mechanism to select an incorrect position? Just guessing. Turning the engine off seems to resolve the issue, until it happens again.

No problems here.

Mick

No problems here yet either.

No.

Not with mine either.

no probs either

No problems

Although back in June when I ordered mine and had a test drive the 60 SE did a lot you could visibly see the steering wheel was off

That's all good. I'm sure somebody would have reported it here if it was a prevalent issue or at all with the Citigo.

I reported the car I test drove to the dealer

Yes - I have this problem. My car pulls left and right. I've posted all the details on this thread.

Will see what it's like when I get it back hopefully next week.

Mmm Vicky that sounds similar to the Up! forum reports. I gather that if you turn off the engine, the next time you start the issue has resolved, so it is hard to demonstrate it to a dealer, and it seems that no fault is showing. It might be that the centering feature of the electro/mechanical steering mechanism is errant. If you haven't already done so it might be a good idea to bring the link to the discussion on the Up! forum with you as corroboration when you go to collect your car. Maybe you might mention what I have said re the steering centering feature. The company that make the steering mechanism are called NSK...the third link in my original post above is a google translation and not very clear but here is a copy and paste of the relevant bit....

"The NSK Steering also controls an automatic centering in the center position, which is to improve safety and comfort because fewer corrective movements are necessary. It also can be programmed: This can, for example, the steering characteristics to adapt to different axle loads, as it will be necessary for other variants of the Up. Unlike in the early days of electromechanical steering systems - were designed as hydraulic steering systems usually better - programmability allows a very good tuning - can be matched by software exactly how to feel the steering is."

It would be great if you were to let us know how you get on.

Hi Liam

Yes it does correct itself when turned off.

I have highlighted the Up forum to the dealer and to Skoda UK, I will also bring up the info posted above - thanks for that.

The steering doesn't centre when the car is cold either, but Skoda UK have said that's normal.

Will let you know what they say when I collect hopefully next week.

Cheers

Vicky

Sorry to bring up an old thread. Vicky can you let me know what the outcome of your steering problem was? Thanks

Hi guys,

I'm having a intermittent steering issue, after starting and moving away the steering feels heavy and unresponsive and sticks in one position? very strange i have told the dealership about and they say they can not find any faults? so now I just give up. I feel like i should go to trading standards or somewhere! this car is a nice little car just what i needed but so many issues..............................

It could be something to do with speed, when I first drive off it feels 'stiff' if thats the right word

Me too, not every time but it is noticeable, it feels like there's no assistance (remember those days!). For a couple of minute's.

When I reverse off the drive then put full LH lock on to move forward the steering seems like it has to think about self-centering, needing a little help but then it's fine. Only notice it when first used, from cold and as said when I've been in reverse from cold, perfectly working otherwise. It's not a concern for me as is but it could be if it's doing it when in forward gear and at any time going forward.

Mine doesn't self centre on a left turn also when moving off from cold. I haven't tried it at a more faster speed though.

You probably get a bit of torque steer under acceleration (one wheel suffers from more wind-up than the other) as it's FWD - unless the car is built with equal length driveshafts, which is rare and not really critical on a low powered vehicle.
