Advice on buying superb

Featured Replies

Thinking of buying a superb - which is the best model or combination to go for please ?

(tbh unlikely to be a new car)

Currently driving an Octavia vrs estate (mk 1) and love the drive but looking for something a bit more comfortable for both tall driver and passengers but which still fun to drive.

Should I be looking to a Superb mk 1 or 2 or stay with an Octy ?

Need more information. Budget? Mileage per year? Do you like the Diesel you drive now?

Love driving my Octy vrs but my passengers have never enjoyed low ride (bumpy) and

Am also looking for a slightly more comfy ride myself

The big question is, of course, diesel or petrol?

For £15k you could get a very low mileage few months old 140tdi S. If you don't need toys, it has all the inherent Superb qualities at a bargain price. At each trim level, a Superb has more than the Octy.

Just how competitive is a diesel these days ?

I don't do huge mileage anymore -would it be worth it ?

These days, diesels are more complex than petrol with things like diesel particulate filters to be regenerated and so on. However they can also be very nice to drive with loads of torque at low revs. With your mileage, unless you're always doing long journeys to get the engine up to temperature, the usual advice is to go with petrol. "Which?" and "Honest John" are good sources of advice.

Agreed. But doing 2000rpm at 75mph makes for very relaxed cruising! Also, if you tow, a diesel wins out with low speed torque.

I went from a mk1 oct vRS to Superb2 170tdi, have to say dont miss the vrs at all! Totally different car but i tended to race around in the v where as now i cruise in the Superb. The only negative, in the tdi ive gone for a few overtakes at say 50-60mph and found myself thinking where the hell is the power! but my vRS was breathed on and was 211hp :)

If you can get a Superb 2, avoid superb 1, 2.0pd as these have plastic engines.

I spent 15 a month ago on mine, 1.8 turbo petrol, and do roughly the same mileage as you. I'd have taken a diesel if I'd had the choice, purely because I'm used to diesels as our main car really, but my wife really wanted the toys of an Elegance (okay so did I) and our 15k budget didn't stretch to a diesel Elegance estate. I can't say that I'm thrilled with the economy, but I have worked out that it would take me a couple of years of the far better economy of the diesel to recover the two grand odd more it would have cost me to buy it as a year old car.
