Annoying rattle mystery from back

Featured Replies

I have an annoying rattle from the back end of my Octavia every time I go over a bump or pot hole.

Its been up on the ramp at Kwik Fit - all is sound, nothing loose. Exhaust in good condition.

I thought I had found it - one of the rear seat locks was not fully locked, but no, its still there. Took the tool tray out, no difference. Boot is empty so nothing in there.

Its annoying and a complete mystery.

Any ideas, suggestions????

I had a similar noise from the back and it was the rear seats on my ford focus, I found this out by unlocking both rear seats and pushing them forward and then going out for a run in the car and no more noise but as soon as I clicked both into place and went out again the noise appeared, so I just wrapped a small piece of tape around the bar that the seats click into and no more noise it was really doing my head in, but all is well now and super quiet.

The only rattle that I have experienced from the rear of my Octy was coming from the housing around the high level brake light. If that's it just push your finger around the plastic cover which on mine seems to stop it. To check if that is the problem just stick some tape around the housing and see if that stops it.

On mine the rattle was quite loud and I was amazed that it was something that simple when I eventually traced it.

I have the same in my 2011 vrs. I have found that if I push the parcel self into its brackets every so often the rattle disappears. I think the main cause is the back seat but I can't find it.

Well almost success.

I think its a combination of the rear seat and parcel shelf. By disconnecting shelf and pushing seats forward - indeed great improvement. So will try a bit of tape as suggested. However even with car is in 'estate mode' still an occasional rattle - but nothing like before.

Have not checked high level brake housing yet.

Thanks for your help and suggestions - it was driving me crazy, and like a lot of things once you have noticed it, you tend to listen out for it and become a bit obsessed.

I know how you feel. Had the same thing recently. Parcel shelf out/in/out. Seats up & down

Turned out to be the tailgate. Latch tightened, seals lubed with silicone. Problem solved. Good luck!

Go outside to your boot and lean on the tailgate lid/spoiler, if it makes a noise and moves down when you press on it that might be your problem.

There are two rubber stoppers at each corner, you will see them once the boot is open, look up at each corner, unscrew them a little to apply more pressure.

Tell me about it. Once i hear a rattle i make it a personal mission of mine to trace it and sort it ASAP as it drives me nuts. Usfull tricks i have used in the past for loose plastic or rubbing rubber plastic trim are spraying silicone spray between all interior panel joints, self adhesive pads to separate surfaces that rub together and electrical tape around metal connectors, exactly as mentioned earlier. Sometimes have even stuffed foam into various crevices and the like. Fixing the rattle / squeak is never a problem it is pinpointing its source that normally takes the time. Seeing as its in the back get someone else to drive while you root about in the back pushing and prodding everything untill it stops then spray, tape, apply tape or foam etc etc etc as required untill it stops. Then relax and enjoy your own brilliance for sorting it. Untill the next one pops up.

Only 1 so far in my octy, the glove box one. Easy fixed though thanks to some posts on here but i dare say i would have traced myself eventually.

Well I think I have fixed it thanks to your suggestions.

I wrapped a couple of layers of black PVC tape around the back seat locking bars and also around the spigots on the rear parcel shelf.

I think most of it was coming from the parcel shelf since the it was a loose fit in the side rails. Now its a tight snug fit. I just went for a drive and oh what peace - no more annoying jiggle that was almost constant.

I also checked the rear rubber buffers on the tailgate. I found that as you unscrew these you get more play in the fitting of the tailgate when shut. So they need to be screwed home as tight as possible.

Now about that occasional buzzz from the dash ...... :giggle:

Nice to see you got the rattle fixed.

Useful thread this one - I've had a clunk from the rear of mine which I keep meaning to get round to investigating, tried the lean on the boot trick and could hear the rear latch clunking. So opened the hatch and adjusted the boot stops out a couple of turns and I can't recreate it now.

So it will be interesting to see if it has gone when I take the car out later.

They seem to be there to apply tension to the boot latch so that it doesn't move up and down against the u-catch.
