Hi guys,

My name is Dave and we have a 2000 Octavia 1.8 20V with only 33k on the clock.

She doesn't get used much these days as she's garaged at my late FiL place in NI and only gets used while we're over here working on the house.

Any way, I found this site while researching some strange behavior with her electrics...

It started with the remote mirror joystick control on the drives door, which works perfectly when switched to the left but when switched to the right it moves both mirrors together  .

This was was confusing the first time but I got used to setting the right mirror first and then just correcting the left.

I'm not sure if it's associated but yesterday we got a strange problem also with the drivers door.

I went to lock the door (with the key as she has centrol locking but not remote central locking) and rather than lock the door, all the windows opened!. Okay, I might have turned the key the wrong way but from this point the drivers door lock won't do anything at all.

The central locking works fine from the locks on the passenger door and the boot, still operating the drivers door as well.

The control on the inside of the drivers door will unlock all the doors but not lock them.

The drivers door still brings up the curtesy light and the "lights-on" alarm when it's opened.

With the key in the drivers door lock, when you turn to the right (clockwise) there's very little resistance, nothing happens but the key will sping back vertical when released.

However, when you turn it left (anti-clockwise) there's still no action and the key stays horizontal when released.

I've had a browse through the forum but didn't come across anything that related directly to these symptoms.

If there is something already here that I missed, then please point me in the right direction, otherwise any suggestions would be most welcome.

TIA

Dave

sounds like a broken wire near drivers door. The windows also go up if you hold the key in the lock position.

Hello Dave, welcome along

Quick update...

I was chatting with a neighbour about this issue with the lock and she'd had exactly the same symptoms with their Golf last year, fixed by a local independant garage.

A quick call yesterday and the Octavia was booked-in this morning.

The parts required were "Door Lock Repair kit" @ £2.16 and "Door Lock Cylinder Repair Kit" @ £1.19 - I had no idea it would be so cheap and the fact that they do the kits and have them in stock proves that this must be a common problem.

Anyway, the door lock is now working fine.

The mirror control is a different issue, which needs a replacement joystick.

We'll live with that until I find one from a breaker.
