if your heater is hot then I'd say you don't have an air lock, it would be the heater that would be the cause of an airlock normally because it's at the highest point in the cooling circuit

Hmmmm - so where does that leave me?

No harm in checking for an air block though. That's what it sounds like to me.

I'll give it a go - what's the best way - squeezing the top hose?

I followed the instructions in the Haynes manual which says you should run the engine and remove the temp sensor. Wait until there is a constant stream of coolant coming out before putting it back together.
