Superb struggles to start on a cold morning

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Has anyone else got this problem? On a cold morning the car really struggles to start, no issues on normal days.

Today I didn't think it would start, never had his issue with other modern cars.

Had it last year but forgot about it as the warmer weather came.

Have you checked out the health of the battery? Also you can check glow plugs, assuming you have a diesel that is.

Nope, I've never had to check these types of things before as I've been lucky enough to always have new or newish cars so my automotive skills are poor at best.

Thanks for the advice, I should really learn more about these things, I can build computers, complex networks etc, but wasn't gifted with automobiles

Are you giving the glow plugs a chance to do their job before you engage the starter? Just 5 seconds should be enough escpecialy as its going to get a lot colder soon, sorry for teaching you to suck eggs if your already doing this.

SW1, there is an ECU that controls the glowplugs. Although I have not looked at a Superb, current ius usually sent to the plugs by a busbar. Just check that it is getting a current straight after you have turned the ignition on from cold with a voltmeter (obviously Engine not running). If the busbar is getting a current then you need to remove the plugs individually and test them to see if they are working. A diesel engine being difficult to start can often be caused by just one plug failing, even on a 6 cyclinder. If the plugs are not getting a current at the busbar then its possibly a fuse in the fusebox which is easy to find as it will be about the biggest fuse in the box. If its not that then you need to start thinking about it being the glowplug ECU.

Or take it to the dealer as its under warranty ;) ;)

Thanks for your help guys, I've owned plenty f other diesels so its not a case of waiting longer before starting.

I'm taking it in for the drivers seat shortly so I will get them to look at this too.

battery on your Superb is also covered by the manufacturer 3 year warranty.

i had mine in this time last year because it was lazy to start - they told me that the battery "needed a charge" - i asked them that does that not implied that the alternator is up the shoot!

it's still on the same battery now, and has been good all summer... will wait and see..!

If it helps, I haven't had any trouble with mine starting (yet!), and it was only 6 degrees on Sunday, so quite cold. The car had been out all night too.

6 degrees?! - That's summer temperatures for up here! -1 last night and even colder out in the sticks. Burrr!

ha ha, I agree in then sort of temps it will start fine. In the lower temps it will be turning over for up to 30 seconds before it fires into life.

I've got it booked in for next week to be looked at along with the drivers seat.

I've mentioned it before on other seat related forums, keep getting lower pain in my back when I'm in the Superb. I've adjusted the settings so many times using best practises and recommendations on driving websites, drove my wives car to work out if it was my back or the car. When I'm in her car I get no back pain which leads me to the conclusion there is something maybe wrong with the seat. we shall see ;o)

Yeah, I get problems too...but not with my back, with my right rear thigh. In my case I'm sure that its because the seat is just too hard and too narrow. I do hope you get yours sorted soon and get some relief.

All the best.

Mike.

Well the only time mine had a struggle starting up (third attempt) it was close to -30 degrees out, -28,9 or something. And it had been out all night and most of the day so it was completely deep frozen. And as I was (still is?) a newbie to the Webasto heater I had it on for a too short time before I tried to start the engine. 10 minutes in that kind of weather is way too little... But it did start up. The gearbox (DSG) where a little slow, needed some rews to move the car. And when rolling: sport suspension! :giggle:

  • 3 weeks later...

Got sick of the slow starting yesterday, ordered online a Bosch S5 battery from EuroCarParts using the Briskoda discount, fitted this morning, starts fab.

Have got the original battery on my smart-charger now in the garage, been there for about an hour and the charger is still giving it a good kicking. - car was out yesterday for about 20-25 miles, so would have assumed it was almost fully charged - Maybe an alternator problem; we'll wait and see...

Having the webasto on for too short a time actually causes starting problems. I had the same on a Rover of mine at -12C. The water gets warm, but not enough time for the engine itself to be warm enough to start easily. So the glowplugs don't switch on because the ECU uses water temperature to decide if they are needed. It's actually easier to start if you don't use the webasto at all, than use it too little in really cold weather.
