Corroding Dark Chrome Wheels

Featured Replies

I know there is a common fault with the above wheels corroding. 3 of mine are doing the same around the centre cap on the chrome face and is starting to look abit of a mess. The wheels are mint except for the corroding so is starting to get on my nerves understandably.

I have been in to the dealer where I bought the car 6 months ago. The car is now 2 years old so still well within warranty. I went in 5 weeks ago any they took pictures to send off to SUK. Didn't hear anything for 4 weeks after ringing them once a week and popping in when I couldn't get through (Lookers Stockport never pick up) This week I rang and they told me that SUK had got back to them and said that the dealer needs to organise getting a quote for refurbishing the wheels and then compare that price to the cost of new wheels. I haven't heard anything since no doubt ill have to ring them again and kick them up the a***.

Has anyone else been given this option or is it generally just a new set jobby? I'm tempted to book in with another Skoda Dealers because these jokers at Stockport are useless!

No need for a drama,

the dealer needs to approve and order the wheels or as they did a couple of months ago with me,

THey just fill in the form, and the wheels were in stock with them.

The pictures your dealership took and sent should have been enough for SKODA UK to approved replacement.

(ask to see the reply they received from Skoda)

Email Skoda UK yourself now with pictures and the story..

Tell the Dealer to stop making a big deal of a little problem that Skoda knows about & deals with easily.

They need to get their priorities, Customer Service, Skoda pays for it, not them.

Eurgh! Makes me want to check my Monte wheels!

At least get some Copper Grease on the facing between Alloys & Steel or even other alloy.

The Skoda service's will not have your wheels off till the 3rd year Brake Fluid change, if even then.

1 winter will be enough to have you in difficulty possibly getting a wheel off, in the event of a puncture.

Best treat your rear Drums exterior now before corrosion takes hold.

I've got the 'cloudy tentacles of doom' affecting my dark chromes near the centre caps too. Tempted to wait until through this winter then get 'em replaced in spring next year. Thinking if asking for the standard silver wheels tho

I'd replace them asap, wouldn't want to give them any chance to say no due to scrapes, gravel or any stuff like that!

Mine are doing the same, I'm going to push for the black gigaro"s

I've never been a fan of alloy wheels with chrome on but I really like these on the VRS and I don't like the other options. If they were to be refurbed I don't know if they would potentially last longer than factory finish as it seems like they are generally defective.

Just emailed SUK so hopefully should get some results soon.

Refurbished Wheels, no chance , You need NEW ones.

Wouldn't suprise me if your Dealer hasn't contacted Skoda UK.

We have had 2 replaced and the dealer even said " Run the bad ones during the Winter and we will change them in the Spring

No Problem

Chrome wheels...but I would think the shiny bits are polished alloy?

Shiny wheels always seem to suffer,at an early stage, from the problem of corrosion under the lacquer coat.

If you polish a surface very smooth and shiny it's surely difficult to get proper adhesion of the lacquer coat.

If Skoda are going to give you new wheels and you intend to keep the car I'd go for silver or black for a longer lasting finish.

I hear what your saying, the silver or black ones will most likely last longer but I don't like them  . When they eventually changed them I guess there will b a 3 year warranty on them again so they can changes them every 2 years

The warranty on the replacement wheels will run out when the warranty on the car does regardless of the replacement date. The consumer rules on warranty replacements are very different to those where you buy the wheels.

The air & moisture is getting behind the protective lacquer (clear) coating on the Dark Chrome wheels,

& it is so much worse when the coating gets damaged.

(Skoda UK are quite within their rights to reject warranty claims where there is obvious 'user abuse or accidental damage'.)

But where the 'white spider' is spreading from the wheel centre, that would be a bit off IMO.

You then get corrosion like you can with any alloy without a protective finish.

The silver, black & white wheels will no doubt corrode under the finish if the is any break or damage to the finish,

its just that it may not be so obvious untill the finish starts to bubble or flake off.

All the wheels on the vRS need some grease between the hub and wheel to stop the corrosion/reaction that is happening at the rear /centre bore, of the wheel. (no matter if Black, White, Silver or Dark Chrome.)

Well thats if you want to reduce the chance of problems, and the problems getting the wheels off even in the near future.

&

a prompt/proper repair is needed to any coating if kerbing or tyre fitter damage.

Im never goin to get the 1st new set at this rate any ways. Eventually got through to them today and the guy that is dealing with it is conveniently on holiday. Its a joke. The other week it was the woman that deals with warranty claims now this week its the service guy. Someone is taking the p*** here. Avoid Skoda Lookers Stockport like the plague!

Take the good pictures,

email Skoda UK customers services with the pictures & car registration number & your phone number.

Your new wheels can be fitted with your tyres changed at any Dealership,

or they can agree to one at which to have your wheels inspected at.

No need for a drama really.

Hmm, interesting about all alloys corroding if damaged. Alloys on my VW Lupo look like they've been on few duties in Afghanistan but there is no corrosion of any kind and they are 10 years old. It is mainly rim damage due to SWMBO finding kerbs strangely alluring when driving my car...

the first thing I will do when I get the car will be to take the wheels off and apply copper grease spray to any mating surfaces.

Again, Lupo never had any probs with galvanic corrosion...

I rang Skoda UK on Friday and after explaining the events over the last 5 weeks they said they would get a claim manager onto it which takes 72 working hours. So I am to expect a call today. They had further evidence of Stockport Lookers Skoda incompetence as they had not passed on my details to SUK to update their owner records as they should have done.

Fingers crossed should start getting some progress today.
