Loud-ish tapping noise under cam cover

Featured Replies

I just though it was normal, but I've listened to another fabia vrs and its not that bad. I noticed it this morning and know I now it's there I hear it all the time lol, could its be worn cams or something.

Shaun

sounds like it could be a worn cam bucket, means new camshaft and new buckets there is a technical word for the buckets but i cant remember it for some reason but i know some people call them buckets someone will be along soon to correct me lol

ahh just came to me.. they are called followers! lol and i actually cant remember if you do have to replace the camshaft or not now or it may just be a precaution.. damn my stupid memory!

What oil have you been using?

+1 wrong oil can result in worn cam....

It's not your engine cover knocking on the boost pipe is it?

I take it this tap is there all the time, not just at start up and soon after, then disappears. If it's there all the time I would agree with the previous posts, if it's there only as I've described it's fairly normal and not a problem.

might be worth trying some hydraulic valve and lifter treatment before spending big bucks

What oil have you been using? No loud tapping noise from mine.

Well, it's has a full skoda service history, except one which was done my quick fit (no it was t me that took it there, previous owner lol)I had a full majour service done in June, the tappi g noise isn't loud but I k ow its there. When I take off the engine cover you can hear it more, and then put your ear to rocker cover and you can hear it

What do I need to have replaced if it is cam followers ??

I still think valve lifter cleaner could help, liqui moly being the best. Give it 2-300 miles and see if it sorts it. If not it will have cleaned all the small oil channels in the engine anyway so worth a go I think.

I wouldn't bother with any oil cleaner/lifter cleaner or anything like that, if it's been fully serviced there's no reason it should be full of cack. Get a manual whip the cover off and get measuring the bucket clearances rather than thinning the oil with that stuff.
