My first faults?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Had the car just over a month now, really impressed with it so far.

Yesterday coming back from work, I had the ABS and TCS lights on. Also, not sure if it is related, but my average mpg was going crazy from 71 to 100mpg. Generally at motorway speeds it has been around 54mpg.

Anyway same fault again today going to work. Brakes seem fine though. When I got to work and switched off the ignition, I switched it back on and only the ABS light was lit.

On arriving home tonight, I plugged in the diagnostic adapter and used the free version of Torque to see if any errors were recorded. No errors and no pending errors. Again tonight only the ABS was lit, but both times car was at a standstill.

Manual says get to a Skoda dealer.

Is this a common problem, or do I need to bite the bullet and take it to the Skoda dealer.?

Can I leave it for a while as I have an upcoming holiday for a few days next weekend and also need to collect some bits from a forum member.

TIA

Obviously the ABS is your brake system and TCS is your traction control. I'm not an expert, but I get the feeling that the torque app is only really for engine ECU faults.....only reason being that I know my car has several other faults having had a full system check, but none of them show the MIL (dash warning light) or create a fault code on torque.

I've upgraded to the full version or torque, and again, no further diagnostic into the cars other systems.

Hope this helps.

Oh, I didn't realise that. what a numpty. :-)

Thanks for the reply. I've seen in another forum via google a link http://www.ebay.co.u...#ht_1180wt_1165

Do you know if that would be able to read non engine data.?

Get VCDS it's pretty much what VAG dealers use.. Generic scanners don't recognise a lot of VAG codes.

ODBII is limited in what it can tell you. As mentioned above VCDS will tell you so much more.

Faulty wheel/abs sensor possibly bug like mentioned without proper code reader hopeless . Is the abs light is on doesn't this mean the abs system won't function correctly if required ? (emergency braking wet roads skidding etc) Can still be driven but more cautious

I wouldn't go with that personally. VCDS is deffo worth downloading as it seems to be what everyone else uses and talks about. Its a free download from here

http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/download/

Your choice of OBDII to USB cable is then down to you.....much like the bluetooth jobs....can either pay a fortune, or go for a cheapy.

I'm yet to buy my cable and try it....I will be going for the cheapy option.

But it is very expensive. If I was to take it to a dealer to diagnose (I'm hoping it is a sensor. as were awash down here the other day, and a post on another forum mentioned corrosion/crud on the connector) about how much are they going to charge.?

If I knew I was going to get good use out of it, I'd just go ahead an buy it, but for a one off (could I be so lucky :D) it is a large outlay.

The Haynes manual for the sensor is pretty much useless. I've just had a quick look under the rear of the car, not being jacked up and cannot see anything like that.

Are the sensors located to the front of the wheels.?

FWIW this is my first car with ABS/TCS so I have never experienced the benefit yet. The other problem I have is I need the car for work, no real feasible way to get there otherwise. I've seen new posts where the Lite version is recommended. has someone successfully used that with a particular cable?

On Ebay there appears to be a bewildering amount of readers, most of which will not work on diesels before 2004. Mine is a 53 plate. Bit of a minefield. So if someone can say Lite with 'this' cable works great, I'd be happy to go down that route.

This one appears to fit the bill?

Vcds lite will let you read and clear fault codes from all the controllers on your car.

You can buy the cheap blue cable from Gendan or off eBay for less than ?20.

Bloody place is only up the road from me. Why aren't they open on Saturdays :D

Invest in the cable. I bought mine from Vagproducts a few years ago, but they have gone now. It's paid for its self many times over. VCDS Lite is free, but it's worth paying the Rosstech registration fee as it opens up more features.

Have contacted Gendan to see if i can pick a cable up from them on Tuesday. Have downloaded VCDS Lite. Shame it doesn't yet work with the bluetooth adapter.

Well I picked the cable up from Gendan tonight. Tidy firm, they made sure the cable would be what I needed by asking what car I was going to use it on, not just selling me a cable.

I had already downloaded the VCDS lite software, but put it in Program Files to keep things tidy. Gendan notes state that it will not save it's settings at that location so uninstalled and installed to the default. Found out the battery in my laptop, does not last very long :(

VCDS stated left front ABS sensor, intermittent signal. I tried reseting the fault, switched ignition off and on and now ABS light blinks, whereas before it was solid.

Unable to do much more now, until I get back from my trip.

I've also been offered the use of an AA generic reader when I need it. :D

I left the baud rate at 9600 and got poor latency on VCDS. What is the highest reliable baud rate people use.?

TIA
