Goodbye Nokians... at least in summer

Featured Replies

Since I used Nokian tyres for almost 10 years, I think the final goodbye to them warrants this post.

For many years Nokians H, V and Z were some of the quietest and best wet handling tyres, I used I think about 14-16 of these, through over 200k miles (a lot of it high speed motorway abroad, so quite high tyre wear). However, my last 2 sets of Nokians turned out to be utterly disappointing.

First I got all weather Nokian enTyres a couple years back for Octavia, these were good in the dry, but would let go suddenly whenever there was a bit of water on tarmac. Not just my experience, I read similar reviews . I looked at the enTyres closely and the rubber they were made off looked different to all Nokian tyres I used earlier.

Then I got Nokian Z G2s, these handled well till about 4mm thread but are very, very noisy. Earlier Nokian Z and Nokian H/V were a lot quieter. Plus now the G2s are worn to 3mm-3.5mm, every time I am in 2nd gear and step on it, the wheels lose traction. I am beginning to think that last 4mm of thread are made of different compund than first 4mm, as I have never experienced this with earlier tyres.

With his in mind, I think it is time for me to stop using Nokian tyres altogether, at least the summer ones.

Just ordered a couple of Goodyear Efficient Grip 205/55 R16 91W AO (Audi fit). At £60 each, 7dB quieter than Nokian Z G2, and very good wet braking results, these look like decent successors to earlier Nokians.

Do not know about Nokian winter tyres, but if they followed summer ones with quality and design, I will stay away from them. Too bad, Nokian WRs were quite good as both winter and all-weather in the UK.

If you had similar experience with Nokians lately, please post, opinions on current winter Nokians would also come handy.

2 weeks into a set of WR A3s (winters). They're a little noisier than my summers (Hankook S1 Evos - superb), but I'd expect that to an extent. Grip is nothing short of amazing so far. Wet or dry. We'll see how they handle the Alps in a couple of months...

Also, they're my first set of Nokians.

I've got a set of Nokian winters - WR-G2s - to put on when it gets cold enough and I find the time to fit them. Will be interesting to see how they do.

...Just an update: the WR-G2s are doing really well so far. Great in cold damp weather and were faultless in the inch or so of wet snow this morning.

I have had WR G2’s which were very impressive (better than my current Bridgestone Blizzaks) and I have fitted a new set of WR A3’s to SWMBO’s TT … these are even better than the G2’s IMO.
