cant decide....vrs or 225 megane

Featured Replies

hey all. didnt know where to post this so if its in the wrong section i apologise....im saving for a car at the minute, and have pretty much decided on two cars. mk1 vrs octavia or 225 megane renaultsport. just wondered if anyones owned a megane 225 at all....and a few opinions/views.

much difference between a mapped vrs and standard megane?

or are cars just two differerent catagories what so ever?!

im just stuck on deciding to be honest. i love the look, style etc of both cars, but out the box the megane is quicker and more scope for futher tuning. (i think)

just figured for the money id spend etc modding the vrs (map exhaust etc) i could probably pick up a megane for...

problem with the Renault though is, you'd be stuck with a Renault HTH :)

yup i would never own a renault, other than an orginal 5 turbo or a gordini, but a megane no..

that being said, out the box, the renault is a better car for performance, brakes diff etc iirc, but which is a better car long term in terms of quality, and tuning potential, the vrs all the way.

I just got rid of my Clio Sport. Thankfully. Horrible build quality.

If you think the performance (and handling?) are roughly equivalent, I would look at reliability and depreciation and I would have thought that the Octy would do better on both counts.

thanks for the reply fellas, i think i may be punching above my weight with the megane...looking at running costs etc on the forums.. how would a mapped vrs do performancewise.. im not after massive figures, but would like something with a fair amount of poke....(if that makes sense haha)

Running costs are really good for the mk1 Octavias. They are a ridiculously practical car, (cheap to run, huge boot, easily fits 5, easy to source parts/upgrades, doesn't have to look like a performance car etc.) there are a lot of buying guides and if you get a good one you definitely won't regret it. Tuning potential is pretty big for the Rs aswell. If you are serious about tuning though I think the general thoughts on it are to go for a 4x4 1.8t from the start as it is the same engine block.

If you get a drive in one you'll see that you couldn't really call a non-mapped vrs slow.

All things weighed up, there are faster, more luxurious and more nimble cars but, they are very good value for money if you don't mind that the styling is a little dated looking.

Good luck getting one and don't be afraid to ask peoples opinions on any that you might be looking at.

P.S. I'd hate to be left with a Renault when things started to go wrong with it

depends what you want as said, the vrs is a q car, and great for tuning, the 4x4s are expensive to tune properly, to get to them to handle properly,

as such out the box the renault is quicker, but with a map on the vrs there wont be much in it

if the 225 has a diff, then there will be no comparison, it will out handle the vrs, however i dont think the base spec 225s did, i remember the cup did, you would need to check though.

I would never own that french cr*p, let them make cheese and wine, thats what they are good at and not cars :giggle:

No no, Luca, you say what you mean bud... don't hold back on the French...

lol, i realise my comments may appear slighty xenophobic....

so i would like to clarify, i really do like france, its not as good as italy (but no where else is to be fair!), i usually holiday there at least once a year as the inlaws live there, the fuel is cheaper than here, the cheese is awesome, as is their bread and pate, their women are sexy, they have balls and stand up for their own rights, they have proper winter and summer seasons, they hae awesome beaches and mountains, and their motorway service stations are better than ours....PLUS one of my oldest best friends is French, and lives in Montpellier, which is an awsome city btw....which has a rather liberal attitude

but why god oh why, do the EU allow them to continue churning out **** cars, really they Germans should be the only ones who make cars....but thats a different conversation :bandit:

Renault have always made a brilliant hot hatch, fast, nimble, and most of all fun. I've owned a Clio and it wasn't the best experience I've had with a brand new car, but that was also the dealership I used. I'd have a 225 Megane ESP the R26.R both cars have there faults but asking a question like that and your bound to get a bias answer to be honest. I love the Octavia and it's a very good cheap car to run and buy, maintenance isn't really too expensive. But it all depend on what you want, there's always one little thing in the back of your mind about a car in the first place and you'll go for that one(if you know what I mean?)

as lee said, you are def gonna get a biased answer on this site,

i tried to be objective saying the meg will be better out the box, but in other areas like quality of parts and reliability, plus long term general ageing and wear and tear, it really doesnt bode well for renault, they just dont make cars to vag spec am afraid.

One is a car and one is a box of bits.

The french do not build cars.. they just throw them together.

i have never known a car with more build quality or reliability issues.

No word of a lie, i have a friend in the recovery business, he said and i quote "if it wasnt for renault, business would be really slow just now"

i just wasnt sure if it was worth buying an octy and modding it to 200+bhp when i could get a megane that would possibly do the same thing... but in standard form.

maintanence on the megane was a bit iffy for me, 18" tyres dont come cheap either i dont think, i want something that "packs a good punch" ive got a gti-6 at the minute and would like something thatd out perform it tbh!

P.s cheers for all the replys fellas. i know im bound to get a bit more of a biase opinion, but if you dont ask...you dont get lol

Not really biased a few here have in the past requested an opinion on car vs car and many times skoda hasnt won.

So its not to do with bias.........................................its just that renault is pi55 poor

right dude, the vrs with a map and a rear arb, will be a much nicer car all round and similar spec to the megane.

Plus i would image cheaper?

def more reliable!

love the quote about being thrown together!

I'm biased! All other cars are poo compared to the octy!

Sent from my Galaxy S3, not a Crapple!

You need to take your blinkers off!

205 gti or 309 gti are the only French motors I'd have!

dont forget the 405 mi16, or the t16 or the renault 5 gordini, or the 4 with a gordini conversion.

I'd have either the 205 or the 309 with the mi16 lump :)

good call sir!

Had a white 405 m16, fast but liked the oil a bit too much, blue everywhere, sit in traffic for half a minute and about a litre oil went past the valve stem seals and into the face of the following motorist

Looked at a few bk in the day but preferred my 309. Mate had a 205 mi16 on throttle bodies, wrapped it round a tree cause it was to fast for him lol.

Got another mate with a 205 1.9 Dt that runs water meth and 13 sec quarters ;)
