cant decide....vrs or 225 megane

Featured Replies

Gonna avoid getting into the Renault are ****e mud slinging here...

But if you do look at a 225 check windows are fully functioning as window regs are common to go - renault contribute ~60% of the repair.

Check suspension as when it fails its expensive, there are NO pattern parts available as the RS uses entirely different components to a standard meg.

It's also built in dieppe separate to the rest of the megane/renault range where it's subject to 'slightly' better build quality.

Comparing a meg to an octy is odd, there's a big difference in cars!

My R26 would make mince meat of octys, and the R26 is the one to go for ideally as it was the last of the mk2's and came with LSD, recaros etc.

Although if you plan to mod it highly, know that you're looking at at least £1200 for coilovers, brake upgrades £800+ and if you want to go over 300ft/lbs you're gonna have to look into forging it.

Same running costs as an octy vrs mk1!

Tax is the same, mpg would be slightly worse than a vrs, and insurance a tad dearer but wouldnt be much in the 2!

Then it will be fine for me to run. just thought with more power etc it might be more thirsty etc.

Its the quattro system that negates the mpg!

I get 30-32mpg on my daily commute, what does a vrs achieve?

If you are serious about tuning though I think the general thoughts on it are to go for a 4x4 1.8t from the start as it is the same engine block.

Hi, sorry im going to hi-jack the thread, a friend of mine was looking at an mk1 s3 and I was thinking since they're vag based is the 4x4 1.8t octy in the same breed or are we looking at something completely different? I keep seeing TT subframes and what not popping around the sales sections so I assume they can't be that indifferent..? :)

If theres a handy link relevant to the topic feel free to link and i'll just have a read, Im not sure what to search for in the search bar.

Mid 30's. 40 on a run

Basically the same chassis and drivetrain

With the S3, you get better engine, better front suspension setup (cast wishbones), better springs/shocks, extra strut braces, better steering rack + ABS system, better seats - works out cheaper to buy in-car, than add afterwards

When highly tuning, Octavia better chassis with its longer wheel base and wider track - better balance basically

Looks like I'll be looking for something sooner rather than later :(

Ah what a shame mate, at least you aren't hurt. I would now use the insurance money to go octy2 vvrs diesel.

Cavalier turbo time I think ;)

Sorry to see that mate, are all the occupants of your car ok?, car can be replaced, people cant. Hope it goes ok for you.

Cav turbo's been on my list a few years dude :)

M3's a possibility I'll have to see what happens now. Hopefully I can buy this back off the ins and use it as a drifter :)

Glad you ok buddy.

Glad you ok buddy.

Cheers mark,

Sore and achy but otherwise ok

ive had bought and my megane was remapped to 280bhp aand my vrs is running 270bhp but the megane kicks full power at 4k revs no turbo lag whats so ever and i could touch 150 in 4th gear and would keep a 3 car gap between a rs4.

on the other hand the vrs is cheaper car to run much more parts avaliable and easy to work on also much more space and a massive boot.

megane has much more spec and better handling but the early megane 225 have a been none to catch fire parts do cost a fair bit tight with no space under the bonnet, good stage 1 map can push them to 300bhp easy ;) but most do suffer from esp fault whitch makes them go into limp mode and wheel bearings abs sensors and door hinges thend to brack.

oh yeah well mine can go zoom and does 220mph in second and eats a maclaren f1 at full chat

150? are we talking mph here?

300 bhp.....stage one........lol even k tec's stage one only gives you around 260 ;)

Yup, you'll need hybrid to push enough air for 300 lol

Well out of the cars i thought about i decided to stay sensible (ish) and go for the vrs. gonna have a good amount of cash to spend on buying and maybe some extras like exhaust map etc. if anyone could reccommend any exhausts maps etc id be greatful!! so on the look out for a mk1 vrs octavia.

Looks like my old one might be up for sale soon. It's a good example or was when I let it go in the summer holidays.

I had my last map done by RS Tuning in Leeds and it was worth every penny. Coincidentally he is a specialist in tuning Renaults especially the 225s etc. When I was there Paul the owner had an R26R outside and I fell in love instantly. It was running about 270bhp and looked the business. The reason I didn't buy a 225 was that they weren't as practical as the Octavia. For me the vRS was always a compromise in terms of speed, handling etc, but it did everything quite well. I can forgive a car a few quirks if it makes me smile, the Octavia never really did. I loved it for what it could do, but it never sparkled at anything. It's a jack of all trades, master of none. They need too much money spending on them to make them go, stop and turn properly. However, as a way of transporting our family from A to B quickly, quietly and safely it was great. That's why I kept it for six and a half years and only sold because we needed more room in the back. Not wanting to put you off or anything.

On another note, our neighbour had a Megane of the 225 shape and it was one of the most unreliable cars I've ever known. In the time he had it, every window failed, the electrics were temperamental to say the least and he spent a fortune on repairs.
