golf coolant leak

Featured Replies

hi all...my wifes 1.4 golf has been leaking coolant for a few weeks now so today i put the car on ramps and had a good poke around.......everything looks fine so started it up and got up to tempture and still no leak, turned engine off and after a few minutes i see a few drips...its coming from the joint between engine and gearbox bellhousing....so iam thinking core plug....anyone had any experince of this on this model...year 2000 1.4 ;)

It's likely to be from the plastic coolant housing above. You may be better off replacing the housing rather than just the O ring that it seals with.

thanks for that fordfan......i did have a good look around but found no signs of water staining.will go back and check...do you mean the thermostat housing on the gearbox side of the engine...cars not here at moment so cant check, would make sense as directly above engine/gearbox join....so parhaps just trickling down the join, leaks very small at moment but will get worse now winters just around the corner....thanks again, paul

I've seen a few leak there on Octavias, a mirror and a torch will help in confirming it.

finally got round to looking at the leak, took the thermostat housing off today and can see where the leak is coming from....theres a plastic tube running from the water puup to the back of the housing sealed with an o ring and held in place with a plastic u shaped clip, very diffault to see when on car.......looks like its going to need a new housing as local factor dont stock the seal on its own........anyone else come across this problem ?
