Icy Blast

Featured Replies

The forecasters are predicting an icy blast with temperatures 5 degrees or below with possible snow/sleet mix for most of UK starting on Friday 26th.

Time to put on those winter tyres while the weather is warm enough to get out!

Hmm - I will be about 300 miles from mine! - in the wrong direction

Just in time for my long weekend break in Scotland :S

Whats that saying; 'fire up the quattro' (with winters obviously :giggle: )

TP

I always remember, "there's not going to be a hurricane" and "barbecue summer" :giggle:

well it's peaked at 5 degrees today so I'd reckon it's fairly certain you'll experience a chill Tim (depending which part of the country you're visiting of course) :rain:

Well just in case the forecasters have this right for once, I've put the old RAF engineers 'hat on' working in the dark by touch light and fitted winters to my lads Fabia II this evening (priorities first).

Yeti will convert Thursday morning all being well; due a morning off.

TP

Winters fitted today, Conti TS830Ps on Black Annapurnas. :giggle:

Polished rims for the salt season? You're brave! :giggle: Im going to hold out putting mine on for a couple more weeks. Only time will tell if thats the right decision or not but I am a fair way down South. :) :sun:

21.5 degrees C here near Bordeaux at 1800hrs this evening - I guess I need to wait a little

Still showing 12 deg here just outside liverpool at 2100 although I'm off to Newcastle Monday, do I fit winters to the vrs and save fuel or do I be lazy and take my 4x4 lol

I'm not sure how much more susceptible polished alloys are than painted, but I didn't have any issues running the stock alloys on my Octy all year round. I like the look of alloys and didn't want to look at steel wheels all winter, so got a set for winter use - couldn't quite run to Annapurnas (very nice) though. Would have liked Materhorns for Summer and use the Spitzbergs for Winter, but took a cheaper option. The only kerbing my alloys have had has been in good weather, so I'm hoping these will survive unscathed! Forecast looks like it'll be not much more than 7C all next week, so I'm pleased I switched over at the weekend.

Nokian WR A3s on MSW 22s, btw.

I'm booked in with my local friendly tyre fitter for Saturday 8:00am to switch mine over for me.

Does anyone know if it is o.k to use the existing (17" Annapurna) wheel nuts on the 16" Skoda steel wheels (7J x16 ET45 I believe...) I had my new tyres (Conti WinterContact) fitted to new steel wheels today (not on car yet..) and the fitter pointed out that the alloy wheel nuts might be too long for the steel wheels and that I would be wise to check first... the tyre and rim guide mentions M14 x 1.5 x 27.5 wheel nuts - are they all the same spec for all types of wheels? Thanks in advance...

You ought to be ok.

Think of it this way; if you have alloys as OEM but a steel spare wheel you don't get given extra wheel nuts to use with the spare.

Its still 15 degC outside @ 10:30pm. Am I mad to have decided to put my winters on?

Let me have your mobile number and I'll give you a ring around 0400 to tell you what the temperature is then. :giggle:

Good point...thanks

Good point...thanks

Yes the same wheel bolts are used for both the alloys and steel rims; only if you use non VAG alloys might you need differing bolts due to the 'cone' profile.

Local forecast for Friday night in Yorkshire/Lincolnshire is -2 degrees. :sun:

05550 257881 - you may call me around 04:45hrs and I'll answer! :giggle: It was 13degC at that time this morning. ;) 12 degC now.
