How much oil

Featured Replies

How much oil should I be burning.

Iv used a liter in 2500 miles. Seems a lot to me but this is my first turbo.

well think vag quote 1 litre up to every 1000 miles, thats a lot though, never had any of mine burn anywhere near that, whats the mileage? does the engine smoke?

As stated above most manufacturers quote consumption of 1 ltr per 1000 miles as within limits. Unabused VAG 1.8T engines rarely burn oil, & are generally regarded as pretty bullit proof. If you don't see any blue smoke start looking for leaks.

That seems like an awful lot. Never use any here between services - 6-8000miles.

Any smoke? Idle/startup? Ask someone to follow you and see too.

Mine doesn't use very much, if at all... Are you putting the right grade in?

I use Castrol Edge 5w-40 fully synthetic and as above and change it every 6k, and

the oil level doesnt change. Hope its just a small oil leak somewhere thats causing this.

Try putting some newspaper under it overnight to show up any slight leaks.

Mine uses exactly the same 1l /2500 miles. Is a bit normal, and depends very much by driving style.

And BTW vag engines are known for burning oil...petrols and diesels.

I'm not worried at all,the engine is in good condition, compression is very good, the car pulls very good, maximul speed is still 230 km/h stoc,I've done the MOT a few month ago and the emissions were perfect.

So everything is fine

I'm thinking its a leak somewhere then she's on 102,678. So not to high. No smoke atoll ever. She's due a timing belt but can't afford that at the momant.

Only thing I cause find wrong with her is there is an intermitant power loss @ 2000rpm that only last a split second. I'm guessing a vac pipe?

Mine using a fair bit lately, by my reckoning it used 700ml in the last 500 miles.

Slightly worrying, but I'm damned if I can see any smoke or leak.

@paul ... what does start up smoke lead too mate ??

I've owned 8 VAG cars 5 x 1.8T's ( all stage 1) & 3 x 1.9TDI 130's & none have ever used any oil between 10k services. So in my experience I would say excessive oil consumption is rare.

If there's no sign of blue smoke or an obvious leak I'd be having a good look at the PCV system. I'd be very suprised if the PCV could chuck out a litre of oil that quickly, but its worth checking for signs of oil splatter around the dipstick tube & the T piece with the PCV valve that sits next to it.

David 8 . @paul ... what does start up smoke lead too mate ?? What colour is it Dave? BTW I keep seeing your VRS in & around St Mellons.

Thats just it, I can't really see any, I was told by my mate to keep a look out on cold starts(valve stem seals ??)

I havn't noticed anything odd, although being colour blind it can be tricky fmr me. I've had a little look for any splatter and it all looks ok.

I guess you keep seeing on a friday thats main day for that area, sometimes monday morning too.

Give me a flash when you next see me, I'll probably wonder who the hell it is, but give it go lol

I'd just keep an eye on it. Get someone to watch the exhaust for you on a cold start up. Oil collecting in the intercooler is another possibility worth checking.

if a dark blue Audi Avant Sport is flashing you around San Melon it'll be me :giggle:

Jamie in TPS was asking me if I knew you & Billy the other day. Of course I totally denied any knowing either of you
