Strange idle on start up - Video & pictures inside!

Featured Replies

So everytime i start my car, it always idles at 800rpm then afer a couple of seconds creeps up to 1000rpm, after 10 minutes or a few mile of driving it sttles back down to 800. It does this everytime i start it even if the engines fully up to temp or cold, after a 2 hour drive or without driving for two days, its everytime. Its like the choke switches on for 10 minutes everytime the engine is switched on.

I can drive it for 30 minutes and the idle will settle down to 800 like normal, if i knock the engine off for 5 seconds and switch it back on it will do the usuall and go back up to 1000 and settle back down to 800 after a mile or so.

PIcture of the dials soon as i turn the key and the engine starts.

How is the condition of your battery.

Is it holding its charge OK and recharging. Not going to need replaced on the first really cold morning is it?

Battery seems fine, Only had the car two weeks so cant say for sure. Never had any problems with it tho, the lights even stay bright if you put them on before starting the engine which can only be a good thing.

What makes you question the battery? i can test the battery and do a drop test on it tomorrow if you think this is going to be the cause of my problems.

Thanks.

Just simply questioning incase the alternator is working overtime & the revs are up.

Unlikely but worth a check.

Well i'll check it tomorrow, do a drop test on it and see if it recovers quick or not. Will also do a charge check to test if the alternator is working on. I'll grease up the terminals and check they are tight also :) one more thing to rule out of anything!

Is this a petrol?

I understand that this is symptoms of the coolant temp sensor, but not sure if this only applies to diesels...

Its the usual vrs engine, its a 2007 blt engine with 74,000 on the clock, its a 1.9 tdi pd 130.

Coolant temp sensor has been replaced with a brand new genuine one earlier today. New genuine camshaft sensor fitted also.

Seems one of the sensors i replaced has solved my bad starting & cutting out issue, done aprox 70 mile since changing the sensors and had no problems with starting or cutting out. Strange idle is still happening though.

It doesnt seem to matter if i start the car and instantly put a/c, full beam lights with fogs, heated screen etc.. on or start it with everything turned off.

This might be one for the auto-elections then!
