Timing belt and water pump

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, just bought myself a furby on a 05 plate and was wondering how i can check that the timing belt and water pump has been changed as the guy i bought it off said he had them done before he put it up for sale.

Cheers

Is it not recorded in the service book ?

Ye the box has been ticked but something about it doesnt seem right and just wanted to check myself for peace of mind

If it didn't ring right you shouldn't have let your money go and purchase the car bud.

It seemed fine at the time but was flicking through the service book earlier and it got me thinking about it

Well for peace of mind, go ahead and change them, then you know for sure the job is right.

How much is the general cost of it?

Depends where you take it.

Anything from £270ish to - £500

£500 ish being the stealership

Ok cheers, think i will have my old mans mate take a look first and see what he thinks.

If the book is marked and you can prove is hasn't been changed then you have a case. As for finding out this I wouldn't know... I know a Aux belt you can tell as it has fresh stamping all over it.

Ring the dealership that ticked the box and find out

There's probably a fair chance he didn't do the work himself, therefore:

- It should be receipted in some form?

- A tick in the appropriate box isn't sufficient verification.

- If carried out by others contact them to confirm either way.

You haven't mentioned related factors such as mileage etc & by rights if he's gone to the trouble to get it done there should be proof positive. It can be difficult to tell from after installation inspection & the prices flagged are realistic. It's something I always verify before doing the deal as failure has dire financial consequences!

Sounds a bit steep - mine was £380 at a Skoda dealer though since I'd negotiated a discount and had some vouchers to use up it only cost me £130

^ Agreed £500 is top end & a bit more. £130 in your case was a bargain as thought mine was cheap at £190 ;)

For the record mine was £380 (including pump) less £150 voucher from the dealer negotiated when I bought the car (a year before the belt was due) less £100 in Skoda vouchers received (unexpectedly) when I took out a two-year service plan.

£299 for a cambelt from a dealer, national pricing.
