Hi

I currently have a 306 xnd, i find i average about 49 mpg out of it, and would like a bit more power when overtaking.

I'm seriously thinking of a new Fabia, possibly estate and definately diesel.

Question is, which engine.

I've driven 1.9 sdi - its ok, but i'd prefer a little more power.

Has anyone had the chance to compare it to the 75bhp 1.4 or 100 bhp 1.9. How do they compare in terms of performance and economy?

Go for the tdi pd 100bhp or even better the VRS 130bhp and more fun than can possibly imagine :D

If only they did a Fabia vRS estate...

I'd have had one. The Fabia hatch is really rather small in terms of carrying capacity for me.

the PD100 isn't bad either, felt plenty fast at motorway cruising. Yep not as fast as the vRS but certainly not bad :)

Fabia estate with the PD100 engine would be a fine bet. Ambient is quite a good spec for the money.

Agreed, 1.9tdi in Ambiente (or Comfort if it's older) can be had for not a lot these days.

The equipment levels are not bad either, as aircon was made 'free' on the non-vRS models effectively (read: they dropped the prices on all but the vRS. Premium or what ;))

SDI will probably be more frugal on fuel as it isn't turbocharged, but as a result will perform as well as the TDI's. My PD100 (with tuning box) hits 50mpg pretty consistently and that's with a hard life of fast A and B roads and motorways. Plenty of poke in the mid-range for safe overtaking and the Elegance trim has lots of nice toys :D 1.4 TDI is a better balanced car as it's less nose-heavy and will achieve slightly better economy, but is not quite up to the PD100 in terms of power.... well worth driving both and seeing which one you prefer :D

Chris

I have a vRS and normally have a 1.9 TDi Ambient Estate as a courtesey car. It performs very well and its only when really wellying it that the vRS feels faster. Its also much more frugal in my experience, returning 62mpg on the 32mile run home. The best out of my vRS is 54mpg. Depends on your priorities really...

I'm also impressed with the handling of the estate. It feels like a hatch to drive, and the suspension is plush rather than sporty. But nice to drive quick too. Great cars...
