Skoda Fabia vrs 07plate a few problems.

Featured Replies

Hi all

new to this forum and new to Skoda.

I am looking for some help with a few faults I am experiencing.

The first is high idling at lights etc 1500rpm ish. This is also felt when slowing down for corners (like a pushing feeling when braking idle being high) not the worst fault but annoying as have to brake harder/sooner to compensate.

The second is when steering at low or high speed there is a very short period there is full assistance from the pump then it fades making the steering heavier. Not the nicest of feelings when going at speed.

No warning lights on dash.

Any help would be great and thanks in advance.

Have I posted in the wrong section?

Welcome

No

High idle - I very occasionally get that - with the emphasis on the "very" - not sure what it is - others will have to make some suggestions (I assume you've checked the carpets aren't holding the pedal down.

Steering - may need a new battery - I replace mine last year - are the instrument lights flickering too? Alternatively the earthing strap may be corroded or something more serious might be wrong. (I had a new rack on my 2004vRS at around 60k miles...)

Hello and welcome!

With regards to the high idling, search the forum for throttle pedal sensor problems as I've seen a few guys on here having similar problems and it seems to be related to throttle pedal sensors!

Not sure about your steering issue but I'm sure someone else will chip in :-)

Awesome forum and awesome cars, you can't go wrong with a VRS fab!

I've had the high idling issue on mine. Managed to get hold of a second hand throttle pedal and all cured! Bit of a faff to fit, but deffo something you could do yourself..........

Thanks for the replies

Tonight I notices the headlights dim slightly when turning the steering wheel. I believe the car was off the road for around 18 months before purchase which probably had a recharged battery as it doesn't look new.

If it points to a new battery what make and Ah should I get? I believe the pump requires 61Ah to operate correctly. Would I go for say 74Ah?

So looking like a New battery to start with. Sure euro car parts have a 30% code which finishes next few days.

Opinions for getting new battery or it being something else wrong causing the steering issue.

I will also check power steering fluid level.

Thanks again for the help and guide.

High idle, as above the throttle pedal, does it decrease if you lift it with your foot? Check the charging rate and note if you have a battery light when you turn the ignition on, if not, it indicates that the load sensing wire from the alternator is broken. See if you can get the car scanned for any faults.

I have vagcom on the laptop so will see how I get on with that. Going to replace the battery anyway and check the pas fluid level.

Alternator load wire has can up a few times. Anyone have a photo or colour of wire to check for? Or area is breaks common?

Thanks for the replies

Tonight I changed the battery and removed the battery tray to gain access to the power steering fluid reservoir. Well it took a full 354ml bottle to get it on the max.

With a fresh battery and top up it seems ok for now.

Not a bad job a bit of a pain with the battery plastic cradle in the way.

There is 2 x 13mm nuts at the front edge of airbox .

A 10mm bolt that secures the airbox to tray.

And finally a 13mm bolt just of centre on the tray.

There is also a breather type pipe that connects to the bottom of the tray.

So it's leaking then...

WD40 on the throttle sensor (carefully applied) cleared for me but mine was rarely that high but did go above 900rpm so was noticeable. The lightest brush with foot (almost nothing) and it would drop. Wierd.

Gone now though, and no sensor issues so far in 6 months.

That tip was thanks to a technician at Northampton Skoda.

Thanks for the tip will give it a go.

I haven't seen any signs of a leak. There is the undertray which hides a lot. I quickly checked the history and haven't seen any signs of the pas fluid checked or replaced. So could have been not checked since it left the factory......

Is there any common pipes/ connection that fail on the pas system?

The fluid leaks internally into the rack boots.
