My last Skoda was an Estelle - will I notice a difference?

Featured Replies

Hi Folks

Returning to Skoda after a break of 30+ years.

Previous ownership experience?

Purchased a two year old Estelle in 1980, 10 months MoT, 4 months tax, and non-standard crankcase ventilation ( a con-rod size hole punched through the side of the block!).

Paid £180 for it.

Purchased a 1973 S100 MoT failure - 35K miles, with a sweet running engine, for £25.

Two evening's work, engines swapped, Estelle given a quick clean and off to the local auction - result? £440 - doubled my money! ( plus £15 for the scrap S100!) As a young self-taught grease monkey, I felt quite pleased with myself. The car was actually purchased by someone a few streets away - they ran it for another 8 years!

My thoughts? A surprisingly easy car to work on. Not too many engine swaps can be done by simply unbolting the back panel, undoing a few cables, a few bolts, and pulling the whole thing out on a trolley jack!

But times have changed!

I'm picking up a 10 month old Superb S 1.4TSi on Thursday. Standard S spec, + dual auto aircon and auto headlights, and spare wheel.

I've driven diesels for the past 20 years, but my driving pattern has changed. Mostly local, short runs. Not too many trips over 10 miles.

My present car has served me well (an 05 Mondeo TDCi that I've had since 03/2006 and 10K miles), but with 100K+ miles on it, it's time to move on.

Yes, I thought of buying another diesel, but all the scary acronyms associated with the modern diesel - DPF, DMF, EGR etc., tell me that the 1.4TSi is probably the best car for me.

So you may see me back on these forums, asking questions. I would be keen to put cruise control on this - I know of one company in Hertfordshire doing this, but I don't care for an 800 mile round trip!

Happy to hear any comments - on my previous Skoda experience, or indeed the experience I am about to head in to.!

Regards

Kenneth Ross

Yes.

I appreciate your attitude to things. Just keep it up.

Regards cruise control, modern cars do not like being played with, and you very often can't predict what kind of punishment they may throw at you, you're probably better off buying one with all the toys that you want!

As for the diesels, all those acronyms you mentioned, are actually not so scary, and all these issues the car will be looking after itself.

Enjoy!

No. Underneath they are identical cars. :giggle:

You might find loading your shopping in the front boot causes damage to the shopping, and, if you look for the dipstick in the rear engine bay you might need a mirror. :giggle:

And please don't try to park it in an Estelle-sized space.

The cost is slightly different but maintenance should be less :)

You will have fewer jokes cracked about this one by your mates as well.

Probably wonder if the engine is working as you won't hear it

Adding cruise is a case of changing the left indicator stalk and reprogramming with VCDS to tell the car you've got cruise. Any VAG dealer or independent should do this for you (including supply and fit of the stalk) for £80-120.

Welcome back to Skoda

A nice friendly Brisky member with VAG-COM that lives in your area might even do a recode for a few beers :)

It would probably have been easier & cheaper to look for 1 with it already on.
