Go on a Diet, get your self down to 3 stone. That will improve MPG

  • buy a cheap diesel and keep the 4x4 for the weekend

  • No way. Far too much fun rocking down the m5 at "insert weighty speed here" and getting 60+ mpg. Just trying to push it toward an easily achievable 100mpg+ at a steady 60. Best at the moment is avg of

Update:

The brakes are now back to OEM 288's Pagid discs and standard pads for the moment.

Rims are on with the tyres as supplied for now. Two Goodyear winters on the front with a fair bit of tread and some cheap crap summers on the back. Hope to get the continental winters fitted tomorrow or Tuesday then all the wheels and tyres that seem to have been breeding in my garage are going on eBay :D

I had a look at removing the mud flaps but I need to know how the arch liner is finished on an Octavia without them, as it looks like mine might flap a bit with the mudflaps removed. I did think about cutting them down a bit instead but after taking 4 hours to get the brakes and wheels swapped it can wait.

Will hopefully have some objective results this week if I get any call outs that are a good distance away before making a start on aero mods

i was thinking, you could lube your car up...might help breach the passage of air

Lol

Looking into the 6 th gear will pm you this week :-)

lube is slightly viscous so would probably cause drag :p if it worked I could possibly get a sponsorship deal ;D KY stickers anyone? :D

Good clean and polish works.

if it works here on a sledge on snow, its gotta work for a car in air...its got to!

1.35 in for the impatient!

na, not the special stuff that Clark uses Karl, that stuff is awesome, laws of physics don't apply to it! it gets you into wallmart from the slope without issue!

Ok. Not been on a long run yet so to able to tell what sort of difference the rims have made so far. But have a question.

When swapping things over I had a look at removing mudguards, does anyone without mudguards have a picture of the rear of the wheel arch so I can see what it should look like, as mine looks odd without the mudguard covering it so I am wondering if there is a difference in the arch liner if you don't have mudguards? Also noticed when driving that new cars don't tend to have mudguards any more so a clear sign that it works.

I also found a supplier for 1mm aluminium sheet (8x4) if I want to have a crack at a mid and rear section belly pan. £30 a sheet but will need to get it on the four post lift to be able to do it right. Most people seem to use coroplast but this tends to decay with use so looking at a more long term solution.

I removed the rear mudguards (no fronts) from my TDI And it doesn't look awful. In fact you wouldn't even know. There is a slight gap where mud could possibly get behind the arch liner however a substantial amount of mud was already in there from when the mudguards were on so i figure it won't make much difference. If anything water etc is more likely to drain out.

Could you elaborate on what a wheel spoiler is? Is it the plastic that drops 2-3 inches in front of the wheel or the ducting stuff that goes behind? Perhaps something else...

Just a thought... But flat sheet is not as aerodynamic as the original belly pan...

More hard-wearing definitely but less aerodynamic.

Reason being the uprated belly pans come with a kind of golf-ball like indentation, which improves laminar air flow.

I'm not _entirely_ sure that it is compatible with our platform, but it came from the audi A3/S3/RS3 section so you never know... I'm sure someone with ETKA will know ;)

Also... If it's not compatible... I'm sure there are other higher performance OEM equivalents. ;)

On VAG cars it goes in front of the wheel and around to the inside of the wheel arch. Was introduced on the Audi A2 I believe, but can now be seen on most of the Audi/VW range and a few of the seat /skoda range. The A2 also has extra smoothing over the centre tunnel and a spoiler on the sub frame to trip the air from the front to middle section to help improve flow. Other manufactures seem to have adopted various styles from small straight strip in front of the wheel to large wrap around steps the width of the car. Especially telling are the developments on the so called Eco cars. Like the Prius and civic.

The dimpled one off the S3 is a rare find and scrappiest want a fortune for them. I am going to chance a full tdi one as it doesn't get tracked so overheating won't be an issue

Did a run up the midlands today and avg of 40 overall (on the trip) on run back from Evesham got 43

Definitely downhill from Ross on Wye :D

Still looking for the engine under tray as cheap as possible and a set of more aero mirrors.

I don't think I could handle smaller mirrors. I love the big octy ones. Perhaps a smaller nearside one but thats it. Although if you look its already more aero than the offside.

I have been driving SWMBO's a2 and that has small mirrors and that has been ok but they are a much better shape

wtf!remove mirrors, and fit 2 mini cameras? you can then view through a central double din?

Under tray from a tdi ordered and in the postal system somewhere trying to find its way to Bridgend. :D

For super aero efficiency I saw on a Hypermiler forum someone put some mirrors that go inside the car by the pillars. Was pretty cool but i have no idea where you get them and whether they are UK legal.
