Aero and economy mods, what have you done or have you thought of doing? What CAN be done?

Flat floor :-)

Will be doing one for mine during this winter with read diffuser :-)

Must say I'm not doing it for more mpg lol

Go on a Diet, get your self down to 3 stone. That will improve MPG

  • buy a cheap diesel and keep the 4x4 for the weekend

  • No way. Far too much fun rocking down the m5 at "insert weighty speed here" and getting 60+ mpg. Just trying to push it toward an easily achievable 100mpg+ at a steady 60. Best at the moment is avg of

How are you getting 80mpg at 60mph in a 1.8 turbo + Remapped + 4x4? Realistically that should see you at 40mpg.

Gassed !!

I've done nothing to make it more eco, i didn't buy a 1.8t to do that infact i sold a diesel to buy vrs,

altho saying that it now does more miles to a tank now its mapped and has sports cat on

oh right..fair point. I've never liked this "theoretically you're getting double mpg" because you aren't, its just half as expensive :)

It is called 'equivalent mpg'. I personally work in pence per mile when evaluating things but mpg is a useful comparison between vehicles.

The nice thing about the 1.8 is that as you improve it for power it tends to get better gas mileage when driven sensibly. It is also an excellent long term prospect as the engines if looked after are very capable of seriously high mileage. So any money spent out will have a chance to be recouped in the long run.

I had specific requirements when I decided to buy it and when I first had it running on petrol I would average low 20's overall but it was always going to be converted to LPG. As I have fixed all the issues like boost and vac leaks things have improved. Added to the improvements from various mods I am now getting better mileage (at faster speeds) than my wife gets in her diesel A2.

A lot of this is based off trip readings and not brim to brims( I do those now and again when I upload all my refilling info for the TCO and pence per mile workings). But an improvement on the trip reading is still an improvement so pushing now to try and get regular 45+. But ideally looking to break 50's without too much hyper miler style effort. I have already had indicated 52 on a Bridgend to Bristol run back in the beginning of the year but that was when I was bored and had time to kill between appointments.

Might also look at using A2 mirrors as they are a bit smaller and a more aerodynamic shape. Also more of them available than the Wrc ones

The stubby mirrors off a Lupo or Arosa could be made to fit. They are about half the size of the Octavia mirrors and a popular mod with Golf mk4 owners I believe.

how much did your lpg conversion cost? My mum is considering a leon 1.8 and especially likes the cupra. My dad isn't impressed with the fuel economy though so perhaps a 1.8t + LPG conversion would be good. Its cheaper than getting a higher mileage worse condition diesel.

I paid 1500 all in for a multipoint E-Gas system (granted not as highly regarded as some but I have had ZERO problems over 4years) the long block 1.8T's are one of the best engines for conversion that there is and as long as you look at it as a long term keeper then they more than pay for themselves. the more miles you do in a year the quicker you recoup the cost.

From my point of view when looking for a car for work, the conversion cost was already mostly covered by the price differential between the equivalent diesel octavia and the 4x4(vrs and cupra were a fair bitmore at the time) when I bought it. £1000+ at the time so the realistic cost was 500. When looking at how I am performing economy wise I always compare against the cost of diesel and how much I would likely get from a diesel.

The beauty of LPG is that you can drive a higher spec petrol car for diesel money.

how much are you paying for lpg karl?its around 80ish here, when i was on the continent recently i saw it as low as 50!

Thanks Karl. I've told my parents about it but they aren't sure...still interesting info i may use in a year or so time when i switch to a vrs :)

I pay 68.4 iirc at the moment in asda in Cardiff gate retail park or morrisons in Cardiff bay and Barry or port talbot So when ever I have to go anywhere past Cardiff (Coventry,Stroud, bham etc) I fill up just off the M4 in Cardiff and with a range between 320-400 dependent on driving style it works well for me. I also have a countrywide stores key card so I can fill up at any of their 24 hr stations on account but that is up to about 74ppl at present so not used as much as when it was 62p

It they want to talk about it in person I can help them out and dependent on where they are I don't mind showing them either. PM me for contact number. I have had a few LPG cars over the years and went through ALL the worries and problems and reasons not to do it at the start as well. I must say again that from MY experiences the 1.8t it an awesome engine for running on LPG with the new multi point stuff. No VSR either like the jap cars (VSR: valve seat recession)

A lot of people will still bang on about "oh it's not half the cost " etc etc due to the old stye systems but modern multi point IS half the cost. And as long as the current rate of uptake stays low then the duty is not likely to change much either.

I remember when I had a Toyota Previa 2.4L with 120L tank that took 100 litres on a fill. Cost of said 100litres was £28.00. Oh how I miss the good old days :D 100 litres of 95ron is 5 times that today

Picked up new disks today but when I dug the original carriers out of the shed they are growing things!!! Need to get them blasted on Monday so hopefully get fitted Tuesday night if it stays dry :D

Ok been looking for engine undertray that I thought was missing and it seems that it is not missing, just that there are two types. The petrol one is a short cover that does not even get to the bottom of the block and the tdi one which goes right to the subframe. So question now is why does the petrol not have the longer cover? Did the tdi have the bigger tray to help make it more economical or to help the engine warmup times?

There was a thread years back about this, iirc its due to noise.

That reminds me, i need a word with you, ill be in touch

I still have a tweeter with your name on it :D

The tray is to stop spray and crud getting into the engine bay, nothing to do with economy.

The tray won't have any effect on aero tbh

Its the rear bumper and how the air exits is where a suction vortex is created

That combined with front bumper.

A vrs front bumper will offer better aero than a shallow bumper. Then make a curtain style splitter for the underside.

Any idea why they are different on the tdi and the 1.8t?

I bet its to allow for more airflow, thus better cooling round back of engine

I'd guess a k0x gets hotter than a vnt ?

I know mine does :D

Calliper carriers dropped off for blasting so hope it stays dry tomorrow so I can get them swapped over.

Really interested to see how much of a difference the rims make.

  • Author

got the carriers back today so MAY have a crack tonight if its not too cold. My back wont take it :D

Been looking at the design touches on lots of newer cars and it looks like the front tyre spoilers as used on the 3L Audi A2's (available as a kit for the normal A2) are popping up everywhere. Mercedes, BMW, Hondas (even the CRV!!) some Audis so this is on the list of to do's.

looking for Free materials on my travels to create grill blocks and to block up under the rear bumper. Thinking old for sale signs might do with some black paint :D

wondering if I should remove mud flaps or trim down to be more of a trailing boat tail behind each wheel?

  • Author

Not got round to it yet but did pressure wash the drive so if its dry tomorrow.

Also been looking at the various designs of tyre spat or wheel arch spoilers as they are called on the A2. So hoping to get something similar

tyre spat ... So hoping to get something similar

carbon fibre motorsport style to you liking ?
