Removing swirls from Yeti

Featured Replies

I've noticed quite bad swirling on the black (plastic I think) sections on the rear doors and rear corners (between the windows) of my Yeti. I assume from a car wash the garage I used put it through.

Will normal hand polishing remove these or do I need to machine polish them out?

I've not tried anything on them yet, so getting it right first time would be good!

TIA

Pete.

Not sure about on plastics but machine polishing will remove swirls easier than by hand, although it is possible. Always good to let garage know you do not want your car washed especially when nice and new. Rotating brush/foam fingers doesn't make a difference, they all cause swirl marks.

I am not 100% familar with the Skoda Yeto but assume that these are 'polished black' plastic inserts, something like the B-Pillar trims shown below:

These are common areas to get marked and will be down to your own wash technique or any other car washing that takes place.........:(

You will really struggle to get these marks out by hand and if you did you would more than likely just fill them as opposed to removing them, machining is the best remedy........:)

Thanks - I'll have to go see a mate who's got the tools for this and the know-how.

Hi

Read your post a couple of days back, and looked closely at the plastic panels on my Superb II (between front door window glass and read door window glass). Pretty much like those in the picture. Mine were hazed, and my initial approach was to try some t-Cut applied by hand. Result? Polished piano black looking like new. So maybe yours won't need machine correction - might just be a wee bit elbow grease!

Ooo - I'll have a go at that then... if it ever stops raining! Cheers. :)

I'd be suprised that under lighting T-Cut hadn't made it worse?

Don't have facility to take photo, but shone a Led-Lenser p7 on it, and no holograms to speak of.......

Where would you rate T-Cut in terms of a cutting polish? Would never use it with my Porter Cable DA, but have found good results by hand on plastics in the past.

To be honest T-Cut it one of those polishes that I used to use as a teenager on my first car's thinking that it would improve the finish and to my knowledge at the time it did.

Now that I am a little older with some experience and knowledge behind me there are a lot of other products on the market that will do a job better at a more controlled level, T-Cut is pretty aggressive and I haven't owned and used any for a long time.......:(

I have the same problem on my 6 month old car...and it has never seen a car wash!

Would SRP by hand be an option? I use it on my paintwork but never tried it on the black plastic as highlighted above.

Using polish on any plastic surface that isn't painted will cause problems in my opinion, the black trim is different and you really need a fine polish to remove the defects in the plastic.

SRP is a filler so it will only slightly mask these marks, then over time the fillers will wash out and they will be there to haunt you again.........:(

Thanks `Baker21` (hate these hieroglyphics...wish I knew peoples name!)

I'll just live with it then.

Regards.

Mike.

You could buy some of this polish I have used it on polycarbonate windows on a caravan and it removes scratches and leaves the window smooth, so it will work on your shiny black bits.

On my Yeti I used Silvo polish, the type in the tin with the cloths in there too, it worked a treat, small circular motion.

Most people call me Baker anyway ;)

Then I will.

Many thanks.

Have this problem on the vRS too on the black plastic on the front pillars in particular

Is it painted plastic? It will still polish like metalwork paint (in theory)

I find it very therapeutic removing swirls. :D

Not sure but pretty sure it's black shiny plastic. My TV is made of similar stuff and noticed swirl like marks on bits of that too and it's only being dusted. Might try polishing that first to see what happens

Probably works similar to polishing headlights. ;)

You are welcome to come and see me for some "therapy" I have a 2006 Fabia vRS, well looked after but there's plenty of "therapy" to be had there!!

Just to be clear to all, these Black Pillar trims are lacquered plastic and like Head Lamps and vehicle paintwork they can be 'corrected'.......:)
