On my 130 PD, the other day the EML came on with no change in the way the car drove.

Start the car up.three times and light went out but the came on again after about a mile and stayed on, but then went off for a short while after topping up with diesel.

Have now filled up with a full tank of diesel and light went out and has stayed out for last 80 miles.

Have had a VAGCOM reading done and only fault recorded is p16550 coolant sensor, could this cause the EML light to come on intermittently.

Yes it would seem the cts is playing up but can they fail intermittently, causing the EML to come on and off, and why the EML to off after filling up with diesel.
