Nexus 4

Featured Replies

Actually hoping it's more like 4-5 weeks myself, I was planning to wait until after the new year since I'd read there wouldn't be any stock at all until Christmas. But now they've showed up I ordered one anyway thinking it'll be Jan by the time the payment comes out. Ah well :)

They do look good, I was also tempted by Huawei models (not that one specifically, but the P600 I think). My issue is that the Nexus 4 is near enough as cheap, and it's "official" Google which should mean that the software support is there for 18 months to 2 years for new features and the like. Other phones may come with the latest Android now (although it actually doesn't in that review, it's already minorly outdated) but you have to depend on either Huawei or third party hobbyists releasing updates to go any further. My experience of third party software was "OK", but the silly little bugs (that either people didn't have the expertise to fix, or couldn't get drivers for from hardware manufacturers, etc) got annoying after a while so I've decided to stick with an official phone, and the Nexus 4 has come along at a great price point for the spec.

edit - although that's not the same as the model I was looking at, the specs are similar. The Nexus has a quad-core processor, more RAM and higher resolution screen. But it misses out on the SD card slot that the Huawei has. Horses for courses really, I don't see me needing expandable storage (my current phone has a 4GB card that I've never filled in 2 years) and I like the extra spec on the N4, so I've bought one. YMMV :)

I tried to buy 1 on release date, but like above it sold out before i could buy it, so I have ordered a galaxy S3.

I have HUGE reservations buying one of these, Mainly because google massively underestimated take up on opening day & sold out within 10 mins, now given other companies did the same in the past & it has been well documented, surely they must have realised at the price offered they would get a massive take up.

So given the bad planning on the stocking of the phone, I have huge reservations on their customer services should any issues arise.

I have reservations about the stock levels as well, but I think historically these devices haven't actually sold that well as the majority of people get subsidised handsets in the UK. I think the price point that this comes in at really could make things shift (given that the 16GB one retails for less than a Galaxy Nexus right now, never mind when the Galaxy was a new handset), I can sort of see why the demand was great. You're right though in that if you think of all the data Google have access to, then they should have been able to predict it better.

Still worth a punt for me, apparently the screen isn't as good as the S3, but it's a good deal less money and it'll be better than the HTC Desire I have now. I can't justify the extra £100+ that the S3 costs (can't really justify the N4 costs if it wasn't for the fact the buttons are starting to flake out on my HTC after 2.5 years and the battery is dying on its arse). It may turn out to be crap, I've never used an LG phone before. But tbh, if Google are happy to put their name on it that's good enough for me, my Desire has never been perfect either and I don't think any product will be. I'm confident it won't be released with any glaring design flaws, and LG are big enough and not a new phone manufacturer so I reckon they'll manage to meet Google's designs fine.

Just got a galaxy note 2 last week it's brilliant! Big screen but definitely not big enough to be a problem. It make galaxy s3's feel and look small in comparison.

I was going to hold out for the nexus 4 also buy the thermal throttling put me off a little, what's the point in having such a fast phone when it gets so hot it has to cut the speed. Possibly not an issue now, but when games get more intensive it could rear its head.

Wasn't keen on all the reviews about the glass breaking and getting hair line fractures either. Roll on the next nexus phone for me, hopefully they'll make it with Motorola seeing as Google bought them. Could be epic!

Have to admit, I was hoping the same after they purchased Motorola earlier this year. Something based on the Razr Maxx would have been nice; 3300mAh battery instead of the 1400mAh that's in my HTC currently would have been excellent.

Some laptops don't even have a battery that big!

Jesus god if people told you Santa wasnt real would you believe them??

stop reading about all the negatives, its a Gorilla Glass exterior, didnt iphone 4 have the same "glass" exterior??...

Galaxy note 2 also has a heating issue....

Roll on my delivery date for the nexus 4 (5 days left), Personally i think currently its the best phone out there for the price.

Note 2 is massive its just laughable really at the size!

Out of interest, when did you place your order Grizzle? I ordered about 6:30pm on the 4th, the money was listed as pending on my credit card the day after (I think). At least one person who ordered after me on the 4th has already received theirs, meanwhile other people I know are finding that the money is just now leaving their accounts (implying that their devices are shipping in some sort of queue). Meanwhile there's no sign of mine. Just trying to work out at what point I should get concerned that it hasn't arrived; I had it sent to work where we've had several instances recently of parcels going missing, I'm wondering if someone's seen the demand for the handsets on eBay and decided to cash in for Christmas...

I didn't focus on the negatives, I weighed it up between my personal pros and cons. While imo there are more pros to the nexus 4 than cons, for me the cons were more important than the pro's.

I'm not saying it's not a nice phone Grizzle and I agree that when you look at the price it is a great bit of kit. My concern with the glass, for myself personally is that the next phone I was to get would be kept for around 2 years as my daily. I'm fairly certain in this 2 years I would drop it and end up with a mess. Yes I believe the iphone 4s did use the same glass exterior, which didn't end up to well, i have friends who will vouch for that lol. Another part that put me off was lack of physical buttons and having virtual buttons taking up space on the screen. After considering this the only real upgrade from the s2 would be speed/updates as the screen size would be the same almost.

As for the size of the note 2, I have hands like shovels, so doesn't really bother me. I understand it may be too big for some, but then they won't buy it so who cares? It's made and filled a niche market and so far ruling it. They said the galaxy s2 was huge when that came out, the nexus 4 is bigger, yet people don't bat an eyelid. To me my note 2 feels normal now and an s3 feels small and like a toy. It's an easy size to live with, pretty much all reviews say the same. For myself I use the phone for the Internet nearly all the time as I don't get chance to sit at a computer with the baby around, the screen size really helps!

At the end of the day all current phones are amazing at what they can do, but everyone has different needs. It would be pretty crap if they were all made of the same materials and same dimensions.
