Skoda Octavia Gear Linkage - Private Video?

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone.

I've got the age old problem of poorly adjusted Gear Linkages. I have used an abused the search bar but all the links to the volkswagen linkage adjustment video on you tube seem to fail. They all say that it is a "Private Video" and don't let me watch it!!!

Is this just me or are others getting the same message?

Is the Video posted anywhere else? I obviously don't want to attempt this before I have watched the video.

Thanks to everyone in advance for any help! :hi:

INDEEDY! Thank you so much for that! Might buy some new linkages just in case mine break so they are at hand should the worst happen!

Thanks again and I'll let you know how I get on!

Here is a second video clip made after the first one posted above.

Note, the presenter now introduces a slightly different technique in that he recommends that the play is taken up in the cable/mech' before locking them. Basically, the cable and 'claw are pulled apart prior to 'springing the claw'

This might make a difference?.

Cheers, Terry

Grrrrrr

Carried out the adjustment with no real problems.... althought finding "home" on the Gearbox is an ar5e! Talk about fiddly... still at least my Pin wasn't broken.

RESULT??? Hardly any change. Its still feels wrong! Its horrible finding a gear and inconsistent to. You push it into third and its that horrible "is it in or not feeling". Its like pushing into Playdoh. Or that horrible feeling you have when ur pushing a rubber ignition lead onto a spark plug and you just can't get it to CLICK onto the plug.

And then other times, other gears, it feels like its "springing" or "centring" into a gear! very disconcerting! 1st and 2nd feel clunky and notchy, almost agricultural.

Any ideas???

AND TO TOP IT OFF MY ENGINE MANAGEMENT LIGHT CAME ON TONIGHT...... how long have I had the car? oh, 2 days now. Joy. The words lemon are slowly forming on my lips.

Ta for any help, advice or consolation.

Does the gear change ease off after driving for a while ?

Thinking maybe clutch

Needs to be fault scanned I'm afraid for the engine light

Bad luck :S

Maybe one to move on asap

Hi,

Don't think its the clutch, never slips and feels good so just doesn't fit really. Thinking of cleaning out the Gear Stick and Mechanism underneath....need a Haynes Manual to see how this all comes apart.

Also read somewhere on here there are some pins in sleeves on the change Mechanism on top of the Gearbox that can be replaced? Anyone know any more about these.

Got a garage appointment tomorrow to see what the fault code is. Feel loathed to move on with "hidden" faults. Basically dishonest and someone else will then be feeling as ****ed off and cheated as me which doesn't sit well.

So, anyone know how easy it is to pull the gear stick mechanism out of the car? and can anyone shed any light on the corroded pin issue on top of the Gearbox. I have tried to get on to the VAGcatalogue site but it seems to be having issues!

MANY THANKS

G

I'm having similar sounding issues with my gearbox when trying to select 3rd/4th.

In my case is seems to get worse as the car warms up if anything. I performed the re-alignment, and everything is now pretty good - when it works.

I've been told by a garage I put it into that the issue is worn selector inside the box, £300 for replacement bits plus about £300 labour, or about £300 for a second hand box and £300 to fit. I phoned another garage and without even looking, having ruled out clutch/dual mass (both been done), he said the same thing.

Whether this is definitve I don't know, I'm wondering if the oil level could be low, I've noticed it's quite oil damp on the oval VW plate on the bottom of the box when I take the under tray off for engine oil change, but I don't have the where with all to check it at the moment. I don't think that £600 is worth spending on a 171k mile car which is likely to need other things over the next couple of years.

Be interested to hear more about these pins Guns mentions.

Any thoughts?

Tom

Hi Tom. In the Garage today for a service cambelt etc. The Mechanic seemed to think it was Gearbox internals not externals (i.e. not linkages etc.) although he did suggest replacement Oil may help. Watch this space. Will be looking at a second hand box if things get no better. Will post any news as it comes!

Right. All done and serviced. Oil change has worked wonders with the gearbox! Had new hose and camshaft position sensor to cure engine management faults. Bad news... well has to be some with this car...... Brake pedal hit the floor on way home..... Inspection revealed soaking rear caliper and suspension. Leaking/open bleed nipple! And now another engine management light! Joy.
