Storing a car outdoors

Featured Replies

What's people's opinions on storing cars outside? I'm keeping a car off the road until about Feb time. So would you recommend covering it or just leaving it as it is? Also would you say I'd need to start it and let it run every so often or will it be ok leaving it?

I've never stored a car for this length of time so excuse my ignorance.

Cheers

John

Left my Polo for longer than that outside and it was fine. The petrol went a bit off, and the battery died, but otherwise it was fine.

I cleaned it before storing it then gave it a wipe over every so often. Sure people will say to do X,Y and Z, but I didn't do anything and it was fine :)

I would make sure its its on hard standing, maybe park it on bits of wood to keep damp out of tyres,

I left my my volvo stood outside for 5 month when engine went and just kept it washed and started it every other week

Our camper stays outside all the time, gets started and moved a couple of feet each way often enough and we keep it clean. No problems so far so good

Maybe a Solar trickle charger :)

I'd avoid a cover, they do more harm than good.

Any dust, dirt, grit etc. between the cover and the car when the wind is blowing does a very good job of replicating sandpaper!

Sun can knacker tyres over time but probably not the time you're talking about.

I would disconnect the battery, keep it on level ground, leave the handbrake off and in gear, keep it clean and it'll be fine...

On a slightly different note, have you SORNed it or let the tax or insurance expire?

If so, are you storing it on indisputably private land?

You wouldn't want it to attract the attention of Mr Plod ;)

Thanks guy's. It's on the drive and sorn. The rusty brake disks are peeing me off the most.

I'll leave it be for now and start it every so often.

The rusty brake discs will be fine, all the rust will come off with the first one or two applications of the pedal. My Audi was left for 6 weeks earlier this year, started first time and the rust was gone from the brakes with a run round the block.

Maybe a Solar trickle charger :)

+1  - my son's using a £9.99 Maplin's one on his Polo and the battery's survived a year including the drain from the alarm.

Pump up your tyres a bit more than normal, might help stop them getting 'flatspots'.
