Since i have had my new engine and turbo fitted, i have let the car warm up everytime i start it and cool down when i pull up at my destination. I let it warm up for atleast 5 mins

What i would greatly benefit from in my situation is a remote engine start

Can anybody point me in the right direction or say if its even possible with the immobiliser n all that??

Doing this on a diesel is pointless.

They only way to get a diesel up to temp is to drive it. Idling will do it more damage.

Unless you're running some mega turbo with silly EGTs, then just driving sensibly for the last few min will be fine. You don't drive up to your house at 100mph.

Best thing to keep it in top condition is service it regularly with the correct oil.

Nothing technically impossible in remote starting it, though your car will need the immobiliser disabled to do it, and I doubt your insurance company will like that. Also leaving a car running unattended is illegal in the UK.

Not possible unless you disable the immobiliser (some how) or permanently fix your immobiliser chip into the car (not very secure).

The only other way to pre-heat the car is fit a diesel/electronic parking heater.

Soft scoop. It's a little ott I know but would just help me out a bit in my situation. Not so much for after my journey, more for the mornings when I'm geting ready for work etc to warm the car up. I understand the car temp won't warm up unless I drive it, however it gives the oil pressure time to settel down ect. I don't and won't drive it straight from cold

Like he says though Jake they're illegal in the UK, i should imagine its not going to be something you can quickly remove from the car, you probably wont be able to declare it to your insurance company so if you have an accident you could find yourself in a very sticky situation.

Then you're just wasting fuel.

If the turbo would be damaged from driving cold, do you think it would be designed that way? How many warranty claims would VAG have under their hands if they couldn't handle being driven from cold.

Think how many TDIs are out there that are driven by "normal" drivers who think of servicing as something that's just a waste of money. "It's got oil in it, why does it need more?" etc etc

I'm not saying rag it from cold, just drive it normally.

It will get up to temp quicker, and you'll get better fuel economy as well.

Webasto heaters are legal but insurance companies in the UK just see them as a fire hazard if they are retrofitted.

You could go for the three glowplug solution, which means the coolant heats up quicker.

If your have the BLT engine, then the EGR cooler does a good job of raising the coolant temperature.

You can leave a running car unattended on private ground, but you wouldn't want to. Oil tempterature takes forever to get up to temp at idle. Better to drive it after a minute or so.

The sump heaters are a reasonable way of raising oil and block temperatures. There are a couple of different types. Some sit in the oil and act like an immersion heater, some are sticky and are appllied to the underside of the sump. If you've an attached garage or or a driveway it's pretty do-able.

Reckon you'd need a 1/2 car cover as well if the car is exposed/outside.

If i was to get a clifford alarm fitted, would they not be able to easily somehow rig up remote start?

Only if you disabled the built in immobiliser.

Sitting with the engine idling will do more damage than just driving it normally from cold.

If you're absolutely adamant about implementing a remote start, before you do anything else, phone your insurance company, and see what they say.

i spoke to a clifford dealer and they are sayin what they do is take the chip out of you spare key and mount in in the steering column, but the prices are unreal

Also do a turbo timer ad on for it too but like i said prices are through the roof

Yeah, so your immobiliser is disabled. Far easier to steal the car and your insurance will likely increase.

How often do turbos go, and how often do turbos take out an entire engine when they do? Think how many TDis are out there on the road.

Is it worth this massive outlay to prevent something that is unlikely to happen if you look after the car and service it regularly.

You could use two keys. One to start engine and let it idle.Other to lock car whilst you wait. But, how many diesels will warm up whilst idling. When I worked, we used to do overnight standby on jobs. Great in a Transit- pillow on passenger side ,and heater on. But the engine needed a run to get it up to temp and on very cold nights ,sometimes another run to heat it up after a few hours.

That's what we have done before.

You're right though it doesn't heat it up much but does make a little difference and usually means after it's run for about 10 mins it's started to give some warm air by the time you set off.

Also means you can run the heated rear window and heated mirrors to clear them.
