possible maf problem !

Featured Replies

hi all

right to try and cut a long story short for a while now i have felt the vrs has been lagging abit in power and my mpg has been not so good. it started coming to my attention when a couple of times i would put my foot down to 40mph change to 2nd and the car will just lose power. so from what i have read up on here plus a mechanic also confirmed to try and unplug the maf i did and the car seemed to pick up better and the lag was not as bad but also the car span up in 2nd which it didnt do before. but to make sure it wasnt me imagining things replugged it back in and yep car didnt pick up so well and also it would hesitate a couple of times but also it has been doing that before aswell. but my main question is where is the best place to get the maf ? dealers, ebay, eurocarparts etc as i dont want to make a mistake in geting it from the wrong place and it plays up again also when fitting a new one is there anything involved with recoding or just a simple plug and go ?

thanks all

Simple plug and go. Always buy genuine bosch! Dealer or wherever you can get one.

well i looked at eurocarparts and they have the bosch unit and its a good price. but just typed in maf into the search bar at the the top and someone got one from eurocarparts and didn't last more then a few days. so might be best to get one from dealer. thing is how much our they from the dealer if anyone has just got one recently and knows the current price as i reckon they will be more money now.

sorry cant help you with dealer price, i just bought a second hand genuine one for a tenner and its been perfect for last 10k miles, sometimes new ones fail, sometimes not. They arent great reliable things.

if you have spare cash buy new, but if like me you have naf all cash get on ebay and buy a second hand one from some vag car breakers as they tend to know theyre onions

ah OK no problem will run down to skoda in the morning and check on that. cash wise its not too much of an issue just don't want to be stung but thanks for your help mate just hope once changed it will solve the issue's but i am pretty much 99% sure its giving up.

the symptoms and checks you have done indicate strongly that the maf is at fault. Expect the car to be better than you can remember.

Your welcome buddy, keep us updated.

lol!! trouble is i cant remember when the car actually felt at its best even when i got it as there was problems then breather pipe pouring out oil and fuel!! :S then the dv valve was stuck wide open but that was discovered at a much later date and few other things but cant complain as the car has been very good to me just common mechanical failures and will do mate fingers crossed will have the car running near on 100%

Do not buy aftermarket, buy a genuine VAG MAF. I got one from TPS about 10 months ago for about £70 exchange.

Nope, mine didn't, but the reading was up and down at the top end of the revs, in line with what my boost gauge was showing
