Absolutely - you know what you like - go for it (why even ask?)

Getting back to the original question....

So you've had a remap and DPF/EGR? Could well be that you've sorted the performance ahead of handling?

There's lot more you can do to the car, to make it a more interesting machine. You won't hit the delights of the R26 chassis, that's for sure - but as an everyday, tweaked vehicle I'm sure you'll be happier than you are currently, while avoiding the issue of negative finance etc.

Some suggestions:

ARBs

Suspension

Fast road disks and pads on the 312mm setup

WALK kit, bush upgrades etc

I'm now planning on having some bodywork done, my doors been rubbed down a bollard so I need that doing. I might get my grille coded at the same time.

I quite fancy the H&R cup kit and my brakes need changing so I might upgrade them too. Should be relitavely sorted if I do that but still with decent running costs and room for the family.

How do I pay for my cars cash ... Save up and live within my means never chase a debt .. Last car was 4.5k ... My superb was 2k my BMW k1200r was 6.5k ... Always cash and outright. Yeah maby I don't have the newest nicest cars etc but if I sell it tomorrow it's all my money and I ain't driving a car that if I sell it I'm still paying for ...

Personally I don't want large amounts of equity tied up in a depreciating asset. I am not interested in owning the car outright, i.e. I will ALWAYS finance whether that be personal loan or PCP. Unless you are seriously minted then it makes no sense to buy a car outright. All cars will cost you money, even when you own them outright; they lose value every day/week/month.

I determine how much a month I am prepared to spend on a car and borrow whatever it costs me to buy the car (minus whatever nominal sum I choose to put in as deposit to get the figures right) and repay it over the whatever period is necessary to keep those monthly payments at or below my monthly budget. The critical thing is to ensure that at any point the value of the car (minus your deposit) is worth more than your outstanding debt so that at any point you choose you can sell the car and pay off the finance. If you're sensible you'll ensure you build up some equity over the period of owning the car car; this is a good way build up a bigger deposit for the next car (which will invariably cost more as it's bigger and better) and keep your monthly payments similar.

As I said, I am not interested in owning the car outright or paying off the loan over the full term; all I am interested in is that the monthly payment is within my monthly budget and the value of the car (minus my deposit) is greater than the outstanding debt. I have a loan against my current car over 5 years but I only intend to own the car for 2 to 3 years max at which point I'll settle the finance and take out a new loan for the next car.

This strategy works for me; it won't appeal to others.

Jonno, how is the Golf R?

Jonno, how is the Golf R?

Great thanks. Different car entirely to a remapped octy vrs. Octy had tons of torque but power tailed off at the top end. R has less torque but loves to be revved. Four wheel drive is awesome. Where the octy would hesitate for grip the R just goes. R seems less economical as you'd expect but it seems to cost the same to fill up and I get similar miles out of a tank. Not really driven it apart from to and from work but will give it a proper run before Christmas.

Glad you're enjoying it! I had a Mk5 GTI before the Octy. Loved it but needed more space (kids).

Actually found the ride & build quality on the Octy preferable. The Golf was crashy, whereas the Octy is softer.

Mind you, if you really needed to boot it, the GTI was quicker - just!

I hear the build quality on the Mk6 is much improved. 4WD must be great too!

Suitably jealous. Enjoy it!

Talking a mate of mine into a Passat CC R36. He's test driving on Monday & I'm hoping to be able to get there too.

4WD & DSG, 300 bhp. Awesome.

(OP - apologies for the hijack!)

R36, Golf R or remapped vRS - performance-wise all very similar. Obviously the 4WD of the R36 / R make it more useable.

If you change the car you'll no doubt wish you'd gone for the other one you were looking at 6 months down the line. With new models out so often it's inevitable that you will always want another one, a newer one. Each one is better than its predecessor and as stated before, chasing the impossible dream.

The octavia is a great car and a remap is only the beginning, there's so much potential for these cars! Especially since you've already said this is the best car for your needs.
