Engine noise at idle

Featured Replies

At idle I've started to hear an occasional engine noise (sounds like a ?? pulley or something) coming from behind the passenger side wheel arch.

Only asking as I could hear it occasionally within the cabin yesterday for the first time when sat waiting to pick the missus up (no she's not trapped under the bonnet).

What's down that side of the engine bay that might cause this? - as you can tell I know where the engine is but little else :)

Thanks all.

Does the noise change/go way when you press the clutch?

nothing I can think of on the passenger side, but it sounds like it could be the aux belt tension pulley which is on the drivers side. I take it it's a TDi so you should be looking at a cam belt change at this mileage as it could also be the cam belt pulley.

DMF? I will have a listen and see. Not sure I've noticed any audible difference with clutch in our out, but yesterday was the first time I'd heard this from inside the car, and it was intermittent anyhow - no chatter or equivalent.

Car has record of a cambelt change at approx 46k and < 3 years ago. To me the sound definitely seems to be coming from the passenger side, or I might have doubted the service history.

I have a similar sound. It was quite obvious when I test drove the car, I thought that perhaps they all sound like this but I'm not so sure. Mine is an SDI, the sound is a bit like a rumble or a pulley noise that goes up and down with the engine speed. I guess i will look at some engine diagrams and try to work it out.
