A couple of times now when opening the drivers door on my Octavia the part of the handle you grab that pulls out and away from the door has stuck out in the open position when I've let go of it.

A quick push and it returns OK.

It clearly needs a little lubrication but what is best, grease or WD40?

My dealer used some white coloured grease on the door hinges and bonnet catch during a recent service, the way it had dried suggested to me that it had be squirted on, do they use a special type?

I use wd40 and it seems to stop the handle sticking for a month or two. I tried the white spray grease and it didn't seem to do anything really.

I get the exact same mate, i applied some WD40 beginning of the year and its now just starting to stick again.

The Scout at work has this problem on the driver's door. I'll try the WD40 fix. Thanks.

I had this too and I used Duck Oil from work as WD40 only lasts a very short time.

Me too. Don't ask WD40 to be a lubricant; it isn't!

In your boot your should have:

Space blanket

Water

Change of clothes

Kendal Mint Cake

WD40

Duct Tape

Vaseline

Sudocreme

I would suggest water + vaseline. Since this is a none-emergency, you need not waste your boot supplies; but concentrate on getting to a water supply, one with pressure is preferable - ensure the area is grime free. Then treat the area with a real lubricant. Vaseline is pretty much pure petroleum jelly (unless you buy a girls variant).

You could just give it a vigorous squiring of GT85, of course - which has all the high pressure cleaning of a water hose down, similar displacement properties of WD40 AND will also line everything with teflon - which is pretty damned perfect for paint on paint / plastic on plastic liquid bearing.

Teflon NEVER breaks down; it's completely man made and has no natural decomposition vector. So I would stick with the boot principle. I did and I am 2 years stick free.

I must admit over the years of browsing this forum I've been confused by some of the advice given.

I once had a tough time removing my alloy wheel bolts and then found that the alloy had stuck to the hub. When I refitted them I applied a thin layer of copper slip to the face of the hub and on the threads of the wheel bolts. I was then told this was dangerous as the wheel nuts could work loose!

I'm now confused about the difference between WD40 and GT85, I thought they were the same, but it would seem I am wrong...

May be wrong, but I think GT85 has a trace of teflon or silicon in it which WD40 doesn't, hence it will lubricate in the long term and not just evaporate.

WD40 is a water dispersant, the other a lubricant (although not a brilliant 'will cure everything' one due to it's spray nature).

Pretty much it AFAIK - also GT85 is dry and WD40 is wet - once on, the latter attracts grime like mad.

My old Octy did this and the new one has a couple of times too. Best bet is to just slam the door when you get in - that way at least if it has stuck out, it'll pop back in again ;)

Mine does it and always has. The handle has always popped back in when the door shuts. If it was sticking I think I'd probably go with a silicon spray/ grease

Gte 85 much better product designed for bikes . Cheaper and does not stink like wd 40

Lot of people clean their bicycle/motorbike with WD40 then protect with GT85, and GT85 is what's normally sold in bike shops.

Good post - being a recent Fabia 1 owner I have found my front door handles don't go back in.

On the drivers side someone had applied some sort of grease product to try and stop the sticking - probably the car dealer. Unfortunately as it rained it caused the grease to run down the drivers door - wiped off with some kitchen roll, no mark to the paint work.

Got plenty of WD40 - my toy is an old school Classic Mini, so WD40 comes with the territory :happy:

Just found GT85 on Amazon for £2.95 including free delivery, so worth a go, just have to wait for posty

Exactly where do you guys spray the lubricant to fix this sticky handle? Into the the opening under the outer handle, which is revealed when the handle is pulled out, or into some of the wholes covered with plugs you see on the door frame when the door is open?
