Turbo worrys

Featured Replies

Hi all

I wondered if anyone could help me with a few concerns I have with my turbo. My car has been using small amounts of oil for awhile now and kicking it out of my exhaust. So today I went to see a local company called Rtech in Hinckley and asked for advise, they said it would be my turbo seals. So I've been looking at 2 options either ko3 hybrid or just a recon, with me saving for my first house with my mrs I imagine a recon would be cheaper. So could anyone point me in the right direction for a recon company or cost that will be involed as I've read a few recon fails on here.

Just for info I currently have a piper exhaust set up, stage 1 map and planning to get a front mount intercooler after or during this fix depending on cost! :(

turbo dynamics, cr turbos, and the name of a company that i forget..

don't think a hybrid will cost loads more than a recon, if you are looking to save costs, buy a secondhand one, don't however buy a chinese ebay jobbie

please god tell me you aren't still driving it?

this is basically what has gone bang on mine.

Cheers Oet it's not so much the cost of the hybrid which worrys me but from what I've read in the past you have to get better injectors (s3 / tt), fuel pump, LSD ect! Maybe wrong?

Hi Dave, I think I met you at April castle Combe, I travelled down with johnny5. When you say "bang" did it happen totally out of the blue or did you have a bit of warning. I've been topping up oil whilst trying to establish its defo the problem and driving wise seems generally ok!

I had a funny whistle from what was thought was the intercooler pipework, but thinking it might have been turbo, but wasnt a turbo going sound. I hadnt really noticed any loss of oil other than normal what i would say usage.

I had given it full beans for about just over 1/4 mile on a bit of dual carriageway in town, roundabout at end, pulled away at roundabout massive screeching sound, dropped off boost, put foot down again same screech, drove home off boost, then she has been towed to unit to be stripped. been stripped now and oil is in everywhere prior to outside of intercooler. So got to clean pipework, fmic, dv and anything else that needs it.

just remember when you are driving it you are taking a chance it will completely fail, so imo i wouldnt drive it, maybe my cautious nature on cars going wrong like that, at moment I only have to clean bits, if i had carried on driving it then might have been doing more like picking veins out of sump/internals.

Stripped it out yes, now looks like going for k04 set up. just put bid in on it. Was gonna whack new turbo on go hybrid something like that, but someone has found a bargain which is too good to pass up.... at moment cold side is off my turbo, no damage to that side, but oily, hot side havent looked at but felt ok, just play in bearing, looser than a well used whore! but with 125,300 on her, and thats the original turbo she is allowed to be a little poorly.

My turbo must of had a hard life with previous owners as its only just about touched 98,000 miles which is abit disappointing as I was expecting my clutch to go first. Well ko4 would be a step to far for me at the min, ko3 hybrid is my limit really. I've had a quick look and found a price from turbo dynamics

http://www.turbodynamics.co.uk/shop/md349-stage-1-hybrid-turbo-for-vag-18t-180bhp-engines-p-2698.html

Total cost £918 which feels pricey, not sure if I could include an exchange with this yet I will have to ask.

I didn't really wanna go above £700 with crimbo being so close tho. :(

Either get a second hand one mate or a hybrid imo.

Will need to clarify but I think you could just put the hybrid in and go then mod the rest when you have collected the bits.

The ko4 is not as good and costs more(normally). Read youll get 260 max from one and you need a lot of bits inc dp and all the bits that go on the hybrid too which would in effect get you up to 300bhp so for me its a no bainer.
