Loud bang from?

Featured Replies

So tonight I accelerated hard from standstill but instead of the gearbox changing gears from 1st to 2nd there was a loud bang (I had the radio on quite loud so didn't exactly hear from whereabouts it came) and the car stayed in 1st on the rev limiter at about 25-30 mph.

I immediately lifted off the throttle and let the engine revs drop, turned off the radio and listened/felt to see if all was well. It was but I'm obviously a bit worried.

The effect was as if the gearstick popped out under hard acceleration in a manual but with a bit more of a thud. I initially thought pothole and puncture tbh.

I hadn't knocked the gearstick or paddles so am at a loss to explain what happened. The car's running fine now.

Has anyone else had/know of such a thing to happen? Might it been unspent fuel popping in the exhaust even?

Open windows and find some small bumps... Drive over them slowly and see what you can hear

Hard acceleration and a loud bang, might well have been a Gearbox thing and not the engine. No misfire or such.

Traction Control & wheel spin.

(The hardest and loudest bang from a vRS i had was, as i accelerated hard from start over a bit of a Hump, it sounded like a Hand Granade going off as Traction Control flickered & then i crested the hump.

I backed right of and thought WTF.)

Only happened the once under the hard acceleration, loss of traction & car lightening as it lifted off the road and got traction again.

?Was this in a vRS,

were you in 'D' or 'S' & accelerating, or had you been in Manual & come to a stop still in manual and forgot to do your own gear changes?

My vRS changes up when hitting the red line even in manual (paddle shift mode), likewise it changes to D1 when coming to rest, so not sure it could be that, unless of course it's not changing

The possibility is IME,

A Glitch if there is a Glitch tends to happen on a slight up slope, foot just onto the brake,

& it is where 'Hill Hold Control' comes in, just is taking bite & Control and you might just accelerate as this happens, there gets to be a little confusion in the DSG..

If the vrs is wheel spining through 1st it sometimes takes a while to change to 2nd and will red line for a few seconds to gain traction before changing.

Hi,

yes it's a vrs. It was just in D pulling away from standstill. I don't think I've ever used S or the paddles. It accelerated perfectly until the gear change required up to 2nd! I'm not sure what IME means but I'm leaning towards a gearbox 'thing.'

Sorry, that was supposed to be, 'the possibility, in my experience'

Should has really said, 'from my experiences'.

I experienced such a bang while very hard acceleration and also there is another thread, http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/249421-bang-hard-acceleration/#entry2925835

axle tramp? I have experianced it twice in my vRS........ not bad for the 40k I've travelled in it.... traction is usually very good.

I get a loud banging from the traction control if I floor it be it in "D" or "S" as soon as the wheels have traction it stops. Were you pulling off fast? Ron.

Were you pulling off fast?

:giggle:

As for the symptoms, I had something similar. Situation: road newly wet from rain after a dry period, set of lights, gave her about 80% throttle in "D". There was a thumping noise that sounded like I'd hit a tree branch and it had got carried around the wheels... Eased off throttle and proceeded as normal, no further symptoms. I'm guessing it was some sort of traction control issue?
