Sticky on standard Vrs noises

Featured Replies

In the pinned section there is a thead about 'normal' engine sounds on the Mk1. I used to be able to view this but now the link appears to be broken. Does anyone know how and if it is possible to view this again?

Also, just another quick point, my 03 plate has failed its MOT on a few normal points but also the fact that over a weekend, it's started spewing white smoke out of the exhaust when revved to about 2000rpm. This smells of oil, and the engine management light is on. Obviously without seeing the car, does this sound like the turbo's shot or could it be the crankshaft bearings? Without stripping the engine can anything be diagnosed?

Thanks in advance

Blown turbo would produce lots of blue smoke and it would do it more so at idle than when reved. When they go they go and the smoke is pretty unmistakeable.

White is coolant and usually points to head gasket failure.

Crank bearings dont make smoke of any sort when they are gone, them make a knocking sound.

take it to your local independent garage they normally give free help.

Thanks folks. It's in a garage at the moment awaiting a decision! If the exhaust smells of oil does this point to anything? It had the oil pump, cylinder head and ancilliaries changed a couple of years ago

Have they said what's wrong with it?

white smoke is normal this time of year, probably just condensation, the VRS's seem to puff out more than most cars, think it's due to it being turbo'd?

Is it thick white smoke? If so you have a problem. Definite difference between smoke and 'steam'

Massive difference between steam from condensation and white smoke from coolant getting into a cylinder. One looks like it could double as a smoke machine in Ibiza

Car's in bits at moment. As soon as I hear anything I'll post on here what it was/is. Definitely not condensation though, far too thick and oily smelling! Wish it was just water!

Thanks, that's the one!
