Tax Predicament

Featured Replies

Right, as you all know I have just bought a Golf GTI. However, I forgot there was no tax on it....

I asked the guy if he could put some tax on for me, but he said he was not insured on it any longer, so he could not get it taxed.

Fair enough thought I, I'll just risk driving it back without tax... I am insured at least, but I have only applied for the insurance this morning.

However, my parents took the liberty of changing the address on my licence (I've just moved out). However, on Friday I got a letter back saying that they had to update my license with a photo license, so the only proof that I even have a license is this letter.

So even assuming I can get a cover note off the insurance, am I even going to be able to get road tax?

What should I do here? I am at a loss... I am going to be driving around in an untaxed car, not because I wont tax, but because I can't, and I dont think this is fair if I get fined just because I can't buy any. :finger:

i've had this trouble before and technically you can't drive the car, you will also need an original certificate of insurance or original cover note, a fax or photocopy is not accepted. getting the insurance won't be a problem as they will see you have a licence on their database. so all you need to do is get the certificate asap and pop down with that and your MOT certificate

You don't need your licence for the tax. You need:

- The V5 or the part that the previous owner gives you

- a current MOT

- a certificate of insurance or the cover note

- the money :D

Do you need to present a driving licence? I only took along my V5, insurance (cover note) and MOT certificate I think when I got my car taxed on the day I bought it...... I may have taken along my old tax disc too, but I don't think that was needed :D

I don't think you need your driving licence to tax a car...IIRC all you need is insurance certificate (can't be copy, etc. though) and the vehicle's V5.

If you want to avoid the fine, don't drive the car.

There is a certain risk in driving it...I was once in a similar situation where I bought a car from a car supermarket (drive away in an hour, etc.) and they don't have tax and you don't have time to get an insurance certificate posted through in an hour.

So I phoned up the local constbulary for the advice, and there words were along the lines of "it is illegal to drive without tax, but we've all been in that situation"...so there is a chance that if you did get stopped the officer might use their discretion...

no licence is needed to tax a vehicle

You don't need your license to buy tax. Just your MOT certificate, valid insurance certificate or cover note, and ?V62 renewal form or ?V10C I think if you don't have one.

Thanks very much for your advice fella's, this forum is great :D

I'll pop down tonight to get the car, hopefully I'll be alright, and I've rang my insurance co, who indeed confirmed that a fax of the covernote would not help me, but that the covernote may well be with me in the morning :)

good luck, although you'll driving illegally

Will the insurance be valid at the time you pick it up? I'd be more concerned about that than the tax, tbh, because once you go and buy the tax, it will cover the whole month of May anyway, since you can only buy it a month at a time.

but if the car has no tax when picked up it'll be illegal, hopefully it'll have a couple days at least

Did they say when the insurance starts from, as part of the small print for the policy will be that it needs to be roadworthy, ie taxed and MOT'd, so you may be paying cover, but not actually be insured!

Chris

Also - make sure you declare the EXACT date when you took over ownership of the car as it is the responsibility of the REGISTERED owner to tax it. If it was not off-road and not declared off-road you'll end up paying the fine (trust me, been there ;))

I know I'll be driving illegaly and I'm not exactly happy about it, but I dont have much choice TBH... the car is 40 miles away, and you have to appreciate that without a car myself, it makes matters EXTREMELY difficult. Incidentally, the policy starts from 11:04 am this morning... but yeah I'd guess that technically I might not be insured, but its better than nowt.
