Hi guys i dunno i this is the right area but here goes ive got a sdi atm but after running it for a while including a trip to the nurburgring id like to beef it up a fair bit.

So along these lines ive been looking for any info to swap to a 2.5tdi unit (seems a scarce conversion) i wondered if anyone on here had attempted it or information, links etc

Im guessing from sdi to tdi id require

Engine box wireing loom ecu clocks

Gear linkage exhaust boost plumbing.

Then brakes and suspension perhaps subframe and fueling system

Base car is octavia ex private hire 02 my mate had a couple through as scrappers recintly which got me thinking. I realise id be easier proberely and cheaper selling then upgradeing im just interested in how hard it would actualy be

Just sell it an buy a 1.9tdi octavia. The 1.9 is a better engine than 2.5 and the 2.5 wont just fit right in. Depending wot 2.5 it is there either 5 cylinder or v6. So not much room in the engine bay

Seconded, because I'm not sure that the 2.5 car engine will fit, and a standard 1.9PD makes at least as much power as the 2.5 van engine. if you want to go for it, the 1.9PD can be tuned up close to the power of the Seat Leon WTC cars!

The 2.5 isn't renown for its mpg either

No worries guys i reconed it would be a effort but not bad to try new things :D

The octy's chasys is way too weak for the 2.5 engine.

Not firm enough for the extra weight or for the extra power? Which bit is the problem?

I'd go for the tdi 110 or tdi 130 and do some mods to make it breath better then remap it. You should see some pretty good gains. Or just buy a VRS and get a LPG conversion like a fella on here in another thread if you want the good economoy like a diesel....you could remap that aswell ! :)

Thought the 2.5 is a longitudinal engine? Hence why it's not fitted to the golf chassis cars which are transverse only?

Apart from compents and trim you would think all octy shells are basicaly the same so id hazard a guess that it would be rigid enough as vrs etc has similar power. Just need to correct suspension and brakes to carry the extra weight then anything else from the tdi. I immagine a a4 would make a good donor as the platforms are pretty similar.

Nearly tradded off to a bora sport last night but it was away before i got there. Were currently running a azn in one of the taxis and its nice enough to drive. :D

Worth having a look at a transverse mount one to see if mounts could be used/adapted/copied - eg T4 or T5 van - or Volvo 850

An engine is an engine, not transverse or longitudinal. How you mount it is another matter...

Well the volvo 850 td is the same engine you're looking at but is mounted transverse... So it obviously can be done:

A3s seem to be able to take fairly big power without too much fuss so I fail to see how an octavia which shares the same chassis is too weak for a 2.5 diesel. The engine is heavier but its not like its going to be 200kg heavier.

I don't think anybody was suggestion the power is the issue, but the extra weight might be, especially when it comes to uprating the suspension accordingly. There aren't any standard options that are designed to cope with more weight in this chassis than the diesels have already, so it may end up getting pretty darned expensive...

Not crazy expensive and they'll do them to suit the application. I personally dont think the weight difference would rule it out even using available off the shelf springs.

Besides I wouldn't call spring choice the same thing as the chassis being "way too weak"

yes its a bit of a pointless conversion tbh, as already stated, the engine is not great anyway, low power and fuel economy, the 1.9 is a better more efficient lump and can be tuned well to suit. The newer vag 2.7 lump or the 3ltr is much better, but to fit in a mk1 octavia will cost a fair bit, and would really be a labour of love, as the mk1 is an older (dated) model now. If you want the 2.5, why not just buy an a4, or an a6 with it fitted?

my last one was mapped at 170, and was seriously quick, with no lag at all, with a hybrid turbo...now that engine would be seriously fast!

I agree guys moving forward i done a aeb into my mk1 golf next time id buy a agu an save alotta hassel. I just wondered if it would of been hard to convert at this point if its a weekends swap to a tdi im happy enough with any of the varients as the sdi is reliable but slow... :D

I reckon you would get a TDI swapped in within a weekend as long as you have all the bits to hand.

I think the hardest bits would be the new ECU, wiring loom and getting the dash clocks talking to the new ECU.

There's also the plumbing for the boost pipes and IC to sort out. I have the feeling the driveshafts may also be different for the 6 speed box too.

Would it not be quicker (and possibly cheaper) to just buy an Octavia with a TDI already in and selling this one. You may also find a nice L&K TDI or something.
