stone between the dust cover and disk brake

Featured Replies

or, what I thought could be. Heard a clanking noise, like having exhausted brake pads......then as it came it went away.

That could well have been a stone under one of the disc shields, yes.

The same with me, except one little thing - it's still there. Need to have a look. May be a stone, at least hope so.

Have had this happen twice recently with all the water and stones on the road.

1st one was quite scary, so loud! Even did the obligatory "brake hard then reverse and brake hard again" test and absolutely nothing changed.

6 miles home and straight out with the jack to get both front wheels off. Had a good look around, released the pads from the discs, prodded around with a small screwdriver "gently" but found nothing. But it did cure it so "Yay"!!

2nd time was only two weeks ago and we could actually tell that it was on the front right wheel.

So up it went again on the jack and wheel off.

This time was so simple, pinged the disc guard and out it popped. A little stone with one flattened side all polished.

Just hope it doesn't happen again.

Happened twice to me, first time ten years ago on a brand new Leon, when AA jacked car up stone fell out, then about a year ago, after driving on fresh chippings, it was so loud thought it was a train on the nearby track, jacked car up and a tiny chipping was lodged in between disc and guard. Quite worrying when you don't know what it is and a pain taking wheels off when you do!

Yes I've had this problem and it sounds terrible, loud enough to turn pedestrians heads and intermittent in happening. Reminded me of the sound of weights being loaded onto a weightlifting barbel. Sometimes it cures itself but I was unlucky to collect a really hard bit of stone that trapped itself in the calliper. I called out Skoda assist (RAC). He removed the calliper to get the stone out, but then managed to cross thread the bolts when reassembling it, which ended up with the RAC having to pay for new hub and bearings, labour and hire car costs.
