strange knocking noise from front suspension, any ideas?

Featured Replies

My car has developed a really weird hollow knocking noise when going over pot holes.

I've had the H&R springs fitted and they are fine but im just concerned that there isnt enought compression on the rubber mount.

My question is; what do you think it could be? should i bother to look for uprated shocks that are designed for lowering springs?

any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sean :)

Ours is doing something similar on the right front with standard suspension. Thought it was the gearbox initially but its not.

Its not terrible and seems a bit intermittent, probably wait until the next service unless it gets worse.

I really can not believe that if both of you do not know what is causing the knock,

you do not have it check ASAP by someone that can identify the cause.

Its a matter of safety IMO to find out,

be it bushes, springs, dampers, something slack, loose or worn it is your suspension,

or it could even be your brakes or steering, untill checked you are taking a risk.

(first and free check is to check your wheel nuts,

& you are as well to check your tyre pressures, then get a mechanic to do the rest.)

I've had this on my Monte, I went through everything I could think of and then went to my local garage (H L Austin in London) and then found out it was a stone lodged in the spring, to say I felt like a complete tool was an understatement but I still went to get it checked cause I didn't want to take the risk.

After having a good look at the suspension on the ramp at work, found that the top mount bearing is shot, and the rubber that it sits with was cut to ribbons!

Decided to change both sides, initially seemed to sort it but the same knocking noise has appeared, had a second look to see what it could be and it looks like the hole where the strut comes through the hub has a tiny bit of damage to it,

The car is going in for a 2nd oil consumption test and hopefully the breather mod, so i shall ask for them to have a look and see what they can make of it

FIngers crossed this wont cost too much to fix!

@sk4gw, no disrespect but the cars 18 months old, done 9k and only 3.5k since its first service. Drives perfectly fine and other than this occasional strange noise....if I took it to the dealers for all the little strange noises it makes it'd never be on my driveway! :-)

& No disrespect was meant to you,

but with knocks and suspension or possible suspension or anything really,

how old a car is or how recently in a garage for a service means nothing.

Since you have a warranty and it was recently serviced, all it costs is time to drive into a Dealership and ask them to look,

I read on another thread, a list of faults with your car since you got it,

Hand brake gator, B Pillar wrap, Replacement alloys for corrosion & a washer jet blocked,

squeeks and such & cosmetic or minor things take a back seat in importance to me,

but with mechanical, i never put off checking.

I really try to find where a noise that should not be there is coming from.

On another thread you are asking about putting wider tyres on and as much as 225's,

i take it that is to assist in a bit of spirited driving, thats where having everything mechanical exactly as it should be is

even more important.

My son's 59 plate Fabia 1 HTP has developed a slight knock/bang from the front suspension, appears to be most obvious when cold and travelling over road imperfections. Goes in to the dealers on Saturday for it's first MOT and their going to have a look then. This noise is not present with our other 60 plate Fabia Elegance.

I had a knocking noise coming from the rear of my Focus once. Thought it was the exhaust, nope. Suspension, nope. Turned out one of the brake calipers was loose. Which was interesting, because I hadn't actually had any work done on the brakes, or a wheel off for several months...

Its really not that bad to make me concerned and as you can tell from the warranty repairs I've had done I'm quite on the ball with getting things sorted. If it gets worrying I'll go into the dealers. One thing I can forgive a Fabia is a couple of rattles and squeeks here and there

Dealer found the issue fairly quickly, an anti-role bar securing cap needed re-torquing. Noise now gone and the car also passed it's fist MOT, albeit needing a new offside brake light bulb (no charge); forgot to re-check them this morning
