How much oil

Featured Replies

How much oil would you expect to use in the first 1000mls running in period. I realise some engines are tighter than others etc. But what would you expect on average. My previous Fabia 1.2 tsi dsg used none. The Octavia has used about half a litre in 600mls maybe slightly less.I know that BMW motor/cycles use a lot when new untill the bores have a good seal but i would not expect a modern diesel to use that much that quick especialy when running in ?

Anything up to 1l per 1000km is within tolerance according to VAG (iirc).

1L per 1000km is insane, that's 30 LITERS between oil changes assuming that you do the full length of the long-life service interval.

My car (with 668km on the clock as of today) currently reads something like 22k km or 580 days until the next change.

You need to thrash it to bed it in else it will always use oil. Bar servicing i have put 0.5litres in mine in 35k.

Let the oil warm to 80c + and then open her up reving as much as you dare to the redline through as many gears as you can. This beds the pistons in creating a nice seal.

Mine hasn't even used 500ml of oil in between services from new. Now on 58K.

I did exercise the engine from day 1 though once warmed up :)

So you guys reckon i should thrash it do you. Im old school running it in at 55-60 mph so i thought this would help oil use in the future but it obviously making it worse is this the general concensus.?

Yep. You need it under load to bed it in properly.

So this means I am going to be forced to trash my new Octavia up the M11 day after day. That's a blow (not).

definitely. Just make sure oil is warm. If you have maxidot it is visible there.

Keeping at one certain rev band is the worst thing you can do, ie 6th gear at 60mph

No, this is just to run it in. Few hundred miles is fine.

For the first 500 miles I gave it a mixture through complete rev range in gears once warm enough.

You don't need to "thrash" it just vary the rev range.

Jesus just drive the thing man!!, the rev limiter is there for a reason use it once in a while!

If i did this on my last three motorcycles i would be running them in at 180mph +
