Seat belt wont lock

Tonight I got in my car and went to put the seat belt on and it would not lock. After several attempts still no joy so i had to, illegally, drive the car a short distance.

On return home I tried again, looking down into the lock I could clearly see the clasp was moving as I pressed the red release part of the lock. I then tried pushing the release (Red part) as I pushed the buckle into the lock and it then locked properly.

Questons...........

Presumably the complete belt will have to be replaced, or can I just get a the short locking part on the transmission tunnel?

What is involved replacing it all assuming that will be the case?

Iis there a fix for this?, it seems odd that I can get it to lock properly only if I press the red section right down.

the locking part (receiver) is fitted to the seat/seat base runner, and can be changed without having to change the belt (assuming its the receiver bit) thats faulty. Its easy enough to take off (1 bolt iirc) once the seat is removed, you should find one on ebay

It is just one bolt to remove but it is a multi-spline one, it looks like a Torx bolt but it isn't.

You may also need to unplug the connector for the seat belt warning which is under the seat.

Make sure you disconnect the battery before trying to remove the seat. Make sure you unplug all the cables to the seat including the airbag cable.

When you've replaced the seatbelt stalk, you need to ensure that the airbag cable is plugged in before you reconnect the battery.

if its a vrs, it wont have airbags, unless its a wrc which do.good points above, also need to remove, seat runner covers, there are little covers that hide the four screws (one per cover) then the 2 bolts need removing from the front of the seat base, then just slide the seat back out of the runners, easier to then remove the seat out the back door, than the front, remove the rear seat base so you dont catch the runners on it and do it damage.

Thanks gents :) Incidently I should have mentioned the car is an 04 Octavia "Silverline" 1.9TD. If I disconnect the battery is this going to cause any problens with radio coding ect?

Also - the splined bolt that we're talking about - I've never had to use a spline tool to remove it as it's actually a squared bolt that goes through the metal seat base so once it's in place, it locks into place anyway.

And it's a standard nut on the other side.

From a bloke who swapped out Bora Sport seats and had to swap the seatbelt lock mechanism on the drivers side ;)

Thanks gents :) Incidently I should have mentioned the car is an 04 Octavia "Silverline" 1.9TD. If I disconnect the battery is this going to cause any problens with radio coding ect?

It shouldn't do as the radio should be paired to the ecu. The Silverline was a limited edition and I'm not sure if it has airbags in the front seats. It is easy enough to check as it will say "airbag" on the side of the seat if it does!

Yeah the bolt is splined...

...But the spline isn't actually useful for much because the inside of the bolt itself that goes into the hole is shaped like a triangle for locating and can only go in one way, and once it's in it doesn't turn.

And on the other side it's a standard bolt which you can use to undo ;)
