What Would Cause This So Suddenly

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've had a few lights come on on the dashboard and i know what each one means as i've looked in the manual but what would cause these to all suddenly come on??

The car was fine when i drove the 140 miles from Stourbridge to Redhill on Sunday and i also didn't have the lights come on on Tuesday when i moved my car but then when i get in it today, i had the above lights (except the handbrake light that went off when handbrake was released) all come on. I also had the power steering light come on to begin with but that went when i turned the ignition back on after about 5 mins.

Could i have done something when i was fitting the front strut brace??

  • How are your brakelights? All working okay? Failed brakelight switch has been known to cause the xmas tree effect...

  • You have connect 4 Get it scanned with VCDS before anything else.

  • I would check your alternator out put, the fact that it starts doesn't mean that alternator is putting out suficiant charge, most chassis systems require above 12v out put to opperate.

Others may have better idea's, im rubbish with electrics... Sometimes get alot of fault codes / lights when the earth leads loose, may have knocked it fitting the brace.

Get it scanned, clear the faults and go from there. Good luck.

Cheers. Just need someone local with vag.com/vcds and willing to travel to me. Don't want to risk buggering anything while these are on. :(

Buy yourself a OBD reader, no where near as good as vagcom but it can give you fault codes and a place to start. Only about £25 on ebay.

I would guess it is something to do with an ABS sensor, absoulte guess that is.

Did this happen straight away or after 10 mins of driving?

Did you get any beeps?

As far as i'm aware they are but will need to get my GF to check them later when we're back from work.

I was supposed to be going home again next weekend, so it's looking like i'm going to have to rent-a-car!! :(

Also worth checking the brake switch itself. The lights might still work but I think there is two outputs from the switch. One for the lights and one that goes to the ECU.

Where would i find the brake switch??

Would moving the vacuum unit to fit the strut have potentially caused any issues??

Just reading a little about the brake light switch failure and it says the dashboard glow plugs will illuminate as well but i haven't had this issue.

Have you been back under the bonnet yet and Had a look around?

You might have pulled a plug out leaning on it, drilled through a important wire, knocked the battery leads loose.

  • Author

Haven't had the bonnet open since i fitted the strut brace but i have driven some 140+ miles since doing it. I also didn't need to do any drilling and didn't lean on anything electric. :(

I checked the brake lights earlier and they were working fine.

I think i need to get under the bonnet tomorrow as it'll be dark when i get home from work.

Having read another post elsewhere, they just disconnected/reconnected the battery and it cleared everything. Would this be a possible route to go down as i don't want to bugger anything else up???

You have connect 4 :)

Red blocked the 4. :D

I wouldn't mind getting it scanned with VCDS but i don't know if anyone local can spare the time to visit me. :(

Bit reluctant to drive it anywhere at the moment.

My Polo had the same lights when the alternator died, and the battery lost power. Does it turn/over start up OK? Could be worth checking the output from the charging systems.

Yep, started and stopped a few times without any issues.

Where are you? if neat Glasgow you're welcome to use my fault code reader.

:D I'm in Surrey, so a tiny bit too far but thanks for the offer.

Did you hit a pot hole or anything? As it's the ABS and ASR lights you have on?

As mentioned it could be the battery/ alternator as it can affect the power steering.

Take a little look in the Diagnostic section on the forum to find a local member with VAGCOM

Hope you get it sorted soon

Nope and it was all fine until i parked her up. I know Rob @ W8 Performance is fairly local but i also know he can be busy.

I hope i can get it sorted before next weekend as i don't really want to hire a car.

Does your speedo cut out at any point or rev its self up? Mine came up with the same lights and turned out to be a reluctor ring on a wheel bearing. My best guess would be abs sensor something like that but to be sure it will need to be scanned. Although.it wont tell you which wheel it is the fault is at if it is that just tells you its on one of the wheels iirc.

  • Author

I haven't seen my speedo cut out or rev up, it drove fine when i went to the doctors this morning, apart from parking without any PAS.

I would still guess at a dodgy abs sensor tbh i know mine was reving up and cutting the speedo as it thought one wheel was doing stupid speeds and thw other 3 were going like 30-60.

Cheers. If i can get VCDS, that would help me.
