Cracked Windscreen...

Featured Replies

How many windscreens were there?

I know there was the green topped one on the early elegance's..

And obviously there's the Smoked top one in the vRS...

Was there a non sun strip one from classics or something?

I don't have screen cover, Screen from the dealer is 142 alone, or £330 fitted (I know, stupid mark up right??)..

So I'm thinking of looking elsewhere for both costs... But don't wanna end up with the wrong screen....

Also... Any opinions on NON OEM screens?? I'm guessing I should avoid them?

Auto glass?

My 2006 Elegance had a non green top screen that cracked. It had little black dots at the top.....not sure if that's the smoked one?

Anyway, auto glass only had the green strip one in stock so I went for that. Looks fine on the elegance......Although I probably prefer the black dotted top one....green strip looks a bit retro these days!

I think non OEM screens are ok....I have heard of problems with OEM screens with auto lights/wipers.......Does the vRS have them? But £142 sounds ok for a dealer price.....non OEM probably won't be much cheaper.

When i bought my first car on a tight budget, i paid £400 for the car and paid a specialist who worked at bmw £80 to fit a non oem screen. He said they are exactly the same apart from some numbers or skoda logo, cant remember...

Anyway had it fitted from the time i bought the car and never had any problems with it.

Auto glass?

There's also RAC windscreens . Or - you could see how much a windscreen fitter would charge for a "home job" , either with you supplying screen or him .

Good point......the auto glass guy did mine in about 40 minutes. So you're only talking 1 hours labour + adhesive.

My Yeti has a Pilkington glass replacement screen it is fine, as for the replacement of your screen I wouldn't hurry to get it done, when you re insure your car make sure you get cover, but even then it is usually £75 excess.

Good luck with it

If your in the north London area I could recommend a place i got mine replaced supplied and fitted for £160 inc vat.

How badly cracked is your screen?

Mine was pretty bad in Feb this year, and was eventually replaced by autoglass after first trying to fit a non tinted screen - I asked if safe to drive while I waited for new tinted screen, and was told that the windscreen is extremely strong even with a bad crack (he demonstrated this on another used screen he had).

I now how two small bullet holes (well stone chips) in the middle of my new screen :@

I asked autoglass to repair them, but as they are too close together, they couldn't do it as they would probably crack my screen as they tried to repair them! So I have to put up with them. Luckily they are not in the driver's view..

but even then it is usually £75 excess.

Last time I claimed - in late 2004, the excess was £60 - when I checked the renewal that came in two days ago - now £90

Yep, AutoGlass replaced mine with a Pilkington one too. I think it cost me about £75 excess. I asked how much it would be to replace it if not using insurance and they said a few hundred pounds.

Nowt wrong with pilkington. Quality product.

Mrs Grrs SDI didn't have a sunstrip btw.

But was the original screen.

+ 1 Autoglass & Pilkington twice! Had the first replacement done only for a stone to impact/crack the base of the new screen around 4 weeks later! £60 excess & less than 1 hour to fit both times on the Felly ;)
