Phone doesn't hold charge whilst running Sat Nav

Current not voltage ! :wall::blush:

No I REALLY meant voltage, I have a high power USB hub that WILL provide the slightly higher current my phone needs to charge, it can happily power my Cannon LiDE scanner (Tried unplugging that and phone still wont charge).

Although USB power is supposed to be 5v, many of the PC PSUs and powered hubs I have checked give slightly lower voltages - between 4.7 and 4.9v; both my wall chargers and car chargers give at least 5v.

In the example I gave about my netbook, the input required is supposed to be 12v and my cigar socket easily provides that, yet it doesnt detect it is being charged until the engine is running and the voltage increases slightly. I suspect the LED indicator and current protection circuitry in the charger leads are dropping the output voltage slightly below 12v until the alternator pumps the base voltage up to ~13.5-14v

I've seen this with some of the USB chargers you plug into the cigarette lighter. Some Of the cheaper ones appear to produce 0.5 amp where I believe you need a 1.0 amp one to charge correctly. Mine is a griffin double USB charger and it does the trick.

sorry for hijacking the thread. Kris1, do you leave the Griffin charger plugged in all the time?

Just wondering as it appears to be one of the few dual charger without a LED which should potentially prevent the battery from flattening when not in use...

Thanks,

Ludo
