Blooming leaking door!

Featured Replies

I've had a massive problem in the last week with my car being damp and steaming up overnight so I guessed at the door carriers. I've done the rears and it still leaked on one side, turned out it was dripping from water tracking down the door handle Bowden cable. That's now sorted! The drivers front however is like a sieve! It's manifesting itself in the picture linked below( borrowed from DGW )

The water is sitting in between the seal and plastic trim inside and soaking the carpet both front and back on the drivers side.

I'm sure it's going to be the carrier when I look but is there any other area It could be coming from as I've already sealed the drivers door about a year ago and it's been fine till 2 weeks ago?

Thanks in advance.

Matt

**** me! Just put my hand on my rear carpets and they are absolutely soaked!

Probably why my car is always steamed up!

Are the drainage holes blocked in yours?

God knows mate! The scuttle drains are clear and I'd guess the drainage holes in the doors are fine as the door isn't full of water as its all in the seal and carpet!

Just noticed mine has being steaming up recently as well will need to wait for a dry day to seal everything :/ hope you get yours sorted mate

Hopefully it'll stop raining so I can sort it tomorrow. I've got a coop bag for life pegged to the map pocket and folded under the door seal sticking out the bottom of the door at the moment. I've been getting funny looks over it! Hopefully it'll work better as the sainsburys carrier seemed to make it worse!

First off, make some of these, fit em and start drying the interior.

Wadded newspaper/kitchen roll will work well on soaking up the excess.

Or if you have access to a vax type machine that's ideal. Soak up the last of the

heavy moisture until you are just left with dampness. Then every time you use the car

make sure you have the aircon on with the heater. After a few weeks you should be

more or less dry.

The ingress will not get any worse while you have the curtains in and after some time you'll

be dry and the condensation will reduce significantly or even stop.

Then wait for warmer weather before you start pulling the doors apart for sealing.

If it's cold you are likely to break even more door clips than you will anyway.

Better to have a dozen or so handy when you tackle the sealing job, you are

bound to break a few whatever the weather.

Then use either plumbers gold, shell tixophalte (What I used) or any bitumen based

sealant or alternatively I've just started using something called Soudal fix all at work which

also sticks to wet surfaces. I recently used it to seal a seeping toilet soil pipe

and it's now fixed and bone dry. (I'm a builder by the way so use this kind of

stuff all the time.)

Part of the problem is that the door carrier is zinc plated and silicone doesn't stick

to zinc very well. Zinc is also often used in roofing applications so if the product

you choose is suitable for roofing applications then you are off to a good start.

Make sure the door seals are fully pressed home all around. I had leakage into mine in the front and eventually traced it to a poorly fitted door seal just about the upper hinge where it started up the pillar. This was pressed home really tight and the problem ceased. I then took the seats out, extracted the rubber topped underfelt and dried it all out - perfectly all right now after nearly two years.

Check out Damp carpets - a new source of the problem

EDIT - sorry - should have explained that it might be damp at the bottom of the door aperture because water is tracking down around a seal not fully pressed home and getting out at the lowest point.

Had a good look today and found the issue. The drivers door seems to be leaking from the speaker surround so I've used some plumbers gold to seal round the speaker surround and also put some behind the speaker then screwed it back in (aftermarket speakers). Also found an issue with the rear passenger door leaking from a missing clip hole so popped a skoda clip in and put a bit of sealer round it too. We'll see how it goes next time it rains.

I've also used a vax Hoover to get up as much moisture/water as possible and put 2 portable dehumidifiers in the damp areas for now to help dry them out. Hopefully it'll be the end of the water ingress for the foreseeable future!

Thanks for he info above guys, ill look into the curtains should my fixings not work.
