Strange electrical quirk - interior lights randomly turned off when driving

Featured Replies

Was driving to work this morning, slight damp roads, nothing flooded though, was about 40 miles into a 60 mile journey when suddenly my internal lights flickered into life (all 3 bulbs in the roofline cluster).

I flicked the switch from "doors open" to "off" and the lights went off. When I got to work, I switched it back to "doors open", locked the car and all seemed to be well. At the time of driving I was on a flat, smooth section of road, without excessive spray from the road.

I had opened the boot, and both offside doors before setting off this morning. I am guessing one of the door / boot locks decided that it was open and triggered the light - all doors were securely closed at the time. Any ideas?

I fixed a T5 with same problem....the connector of the switch wasn't pressed because had a bloken clip

Did the "door open" light on the instruments come on?

If it did, I'm thinking the issue is with a door switch, and if it didn't probabaly an issue with the courtesy light cluster switch.

Sadly that feature does not exist on my car :-(

I was more thinking microswitch in a door/tailgate. Maybe I should drop down the courtesy light cluster and see if it is full of rain... I have another 5+ hours of motoring ahead of me tonight, so will see if it plays up again. At the time, I did glance down and my drivers door puddle light wasn't on.

The warning light in the dash doesn't always show when the door switch is faulty. The switch only has to be open for a few ms for the CCU to see it and hold the courtesy lights on.

Yeah, i'd call door lock mechanism microswitch.

Flicker on once more when on the motorway, shortly after I had stopped at a service station and had opened the drivers door and the tailgate. I am wondering if maybe the loom between the drivers door and the A-pillar might have finally started to fail - coupled with the rain/spray from the roads.

The driver's door microswitch is handled by the controller attached to the window motor - there isn't a separate wire. As you know water can get in the door and the large connector to the controller.

The tailgate lock does have separate switch and motor wires that connect to the CCU. When you turn the key in the tailgate, does your variant lock/unlock the doors?

Normally it does lock/unlock - I haven't checked in the last few days though. Will to tomorrow and report back.

Turning the key in the boot lock does indeed operate the door locks.

Mine did this and the control unit in the door was full of water. It made made all sorts happen. The interior lights would flash on and off, the door open light on the dash would flicker at the same time and the central locking went mental. It was a bit disconcerting as I had all three children in at the time and we were miles from home. I had to get behind the door card, take off the control unit and empty it out. There must have been a cup full of water in the black box.

In the end I needed a new door loom and circuit board. It was a simple fix, but a pain in the rear timewise. Hope yours is more simple to fix.

The boot lock often sticks and doesn't return the switch to the centre position. Give it a good lube and see it that solves it. Do the other locks while you're at it.

If you can get to the switch behind the boot lock, give it a spray with some contact cleaner.

Hopefully mine won't be this bad, but I'll take the door trim off when I get a chance - probably next weekend the way my schedule is looking currently.

I'll give it a go - don't normally use the lock in the boot (or the door) - however I do try and ensure it is free every few months just incase the remote part of my fob gives up the ghost.

Just scanned the car and got this back:
